Losing my mind - is it me or Vegas

So I said I was really going to learn Track Motion techniques correctly - got Pro Editing Workshop 8....

Pg 361 - start of Using Track Motion section

Book says open Track Motion - and on page 363 says starting with the top-left corner - a number of tools are found within the Track Motion dialog..... and then names "show propeties", "normal edit" just below...

I look in the upper left of my track motion window - I don't have a show properties or a normal edit tool button - I am using version 8.

I can't follow the book cause I can't even find the first tool buttons mentioned - I don't even know what the book is talking about when it says the track motion dialog.

I am thinking maybe I have turned some view off that should be on. What settings do I need to change to get those buttons to show up in the track motion window ? Thanks.

It's probably not you, nor Vegas.

It's probably me.

There was some mixup on the manuscript between Track Motion and Pan Crop that was missed (which was fixed for the V9 book, released a week or so ago).

I don't have Vegas or the book here in front of me at the moment, but will reply when I do. Sorry for the confusion!

David - Thanks - I didn't know you wrote the book, but I have read some of your EventDV articles and have really enjoyed them (if that is you).

The issue for me is I am too literal for my own good - so when I am learning something new that I really don't understand, I usually choose one or two topics that I really want to dive into and then take a training manual and really follow it - almost word for word. It helps me judge how well either I can relate to the author or how well the author can relate to details that concern me.

So that's what I was doing - and I kept going back and forth between the book and vegas' screens - and I could just not comprehend what was being said - so I thought, I might as well not go any further until I understand what I was not understanding - which was - were are these buttons ?

So I appreciate your response. I will just keep reading and doing and see how it goes now that I know some of the icons the book talks about are not really there. Hopefully this was just a minor setback to my new year's resolution. :)

Is there a down loadable revision available ?

BTW - I was going to wait for the version 9 book - but thought since vegas 8 generally sounds more solid (IMO based on postings I read) than 9 does right now, I wanted to get the version 8 veg's on the DVD - cause if I continue with vegas 8, it won't read V9 veg's. So I went with the version 8 book.

I didn't write the book, I was the technical editor for that and the V9 book.

No way could I have written the book, the author is our very own DSE / Spot here on this forum.

What you found is one of the few mistakes we didn't catch out of the many we did. IIRC in that book, if you transpose the information for pan crop vs. track motion you'll have a good start. PITA I know. You're not the first person to notice it :(

You'd have to check with the publisher about any digital downloads, but I didn't work on anything like that. And thanks for the kudos re: eventDV. Got more of those coming and some fun things down the road.

David

I have read and done exercises through three more pages of the book regarding Motion Tracking. The book talks about Size at Center button - and all I find is Scale at Center - and when I try it it doesn't operate the same as what the book indicates. The book says reduce the track event size and that the size is displayed near the cursor. That does not happen. The book talks about "in Properties Center dialog box input 180 for the left box and 120 for the right box" - and I can't find a left or a right box anywhere.

How about this.

Any chance I can be sent the corrected version that is in the version 9 book ? Just for the section on Motion Tracking. It doesn't seem to make any sense to me to keep going through this if the section is incorrect. I'm not learning it and it is very frustrating.

Where would be the best place to go to ask for that ?

As I mentioned up above the terms are switched with the pan crop section. You should be able to substitute one for the other (in the V8 book ONLY) when dealing with that chapter.

Thanks - I'll give it a try.
