lost avi files???

Was about 3 hours into working on project (have used Vegas many times before) - all of the sudden the avi video files were gone - "media offline" - the audio associated with them were still in the project and working fine. Went to the drive where the video was stored and all the clips showed the AVI logo - rather than the picture of what was on the clip like it did before. And I was not able to open any of the avi files using any of my programs (Windows media player, real player, etc.)
The rest of the project appears fine -
Am using Sony Pro Vegas 9 64 bit with Windows 7. Computer is media ready and has been used many times before. Files captured from Sony camera - same as many times before. Project is small - only 1 minute long.
Any ideas of what would cause this in the middle of working on a project?

Well, that certainly doesn't give one a good feeling ! I am wondering if there is an issue with the disk drive - as a test, see if you can copy the files to another drive (at least a couple of them). Does that work OK ? Can you play the clip back outside of Vegas ?? The first thing to do is verify the original clips are OK and viewable.

Thanks for the ideas - will do that. I am not pointing a finger at Vegas right now - we have used it many times in the past with good results. Just looking for possibilities right now.
The files were unable to be opened in the disk drive as well - so we thought it may be a problem with the drive. Photo and word files in the drive were Ok though.
Won't get a chance to move them to another disk and check them out til Monday - but will do so then.
Right now - we are thinking - recapture the video and try again.

Yes, recapture, and point Vegas to the new files. Should work.

External drives used for video editing are prone to heating -- which can cause the drive to shut down or result in corrupted data. I had to buy a drive enclosure with a fan to work for long periods of time. Vegas itself does not change file contents while editing.
