Lost CD Burner In VF

randy-stewart wrote on 4/22/2002, 12:56 AM
Folks,
VF no longer picks up my CD burner in the properties, CD tab. When I go to make a VCD, it just sits there after I give the file a name and hit next (after selecting the wite to VCD option). It used to do this fine. I just deleted Video Wave 5 and Ulead Video Studio 5 from my hard drive and I bet that has something to do with it. Will reinstallation of VF fix it? Anyone come across this problem before? Appreciate your help in advance.

Chienworks (Kelly),
Thanks for uploading my latest creation on your web site so fast. Really like your site!
Thanks,
Randy

Hey stewart-

I had a similar problem once. My guess is that something happened to your aspi drivers during the the removal of VW5. Update your aspi drivers and I bet you get your drive back.

Hi Vince;

I have a related problem. VF will not recognize my CDR drive. When I select the appropriate options for the creation of a VCD, is scans for a drive, and comes back with a "No Device" result.

Sonic tech support suggested that it might be because my burner is number two on the IDE cable, under my DVD drive. That seems weird to me, as no other software has a problem with the hardware configuration.

This is not a huge problem, as I generally use NERO to do my burns, but I did want to compare results.

Vince,
Yeah, I figured it has to do with drivers. I've reinstalled Creator 4 and VF. Have also asked Windows ME to look for new hardware and confirm the drivers I'm using are the most up to date...and it has. The drive works fine when I burn directly from the hard drive. Is there something else...like reinstalling the drivers for the CD-RW that I need to do? Sounds reasonable. One other thing, I found out is that CD Creator 4 (burn software I'm using) is a Roxio product. I might try reinstalling VW5 to see if that does anything first. My Ulead Video Studio 6 doesn't recognize the drive either so I'm wondering if something else is up. Will let you know. Thanks for the lead.

Okay, got it fixed. Had to reinstall the ASPI drivers. Two of the four had been overwitten. Got them from:

C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\OLK8374\Radified Guide to Updating ASPI Layer Drivers with Force ASPI (ForceASPI v1.7).html

Had to download Force ASPI (150KB) from cyrus.troy. Once downloaded, had to unzip the file, then went into the unzipped folder and clicked on the install.exe file. It ran very quickly and after rebooting, everything was fine. Those using this fix should read the web site closely as it has different drivers for different operating systems. Hope this helps others.

Hi there,

Please confirm - I don't quite understand your links - or my browser doesn't!:

1:
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\OLK8374\Radified Guide to Updating ASPI Layer Drivers with Force ASPI (ForceASPI v1.7).html

2:
from cyrus.troy

This seems a good solution when and if I too have an ASPI problem.

Thanks for sharing all your research work.

Randy, glad you got it working. Never mind my e-mail, then.

Grazie,
The correct link (http://aspi.radified.com/) takes you to a web site that tells all about the ASPI issue (sorry, I pasted in the e-mail web link that I sent to myself before which wouldn't work here). Go down to the ASPI section. It recommends a couple of options to fix the problem. The one I chose was to download the force ASPI software that replaces the 4.60 (1021) version files on my Windows ME system. To get the software, I had to go to the Cryus.troy site (it's a link on the web page above) and follow the directions to download the force ASPI program files. It takes about 10 seconds to download (I saved it to the desktop). Then I clicked on the folder and got a message that asks me to unzip the files and did I want to do that now. I said yes, then, after it unzipped, I opened the new folder and clicked on the install program (can't remember the full name but it has the word instal in it), ran the program, and voala, a DOS box came up, and installed the files I needed, and after reboot, it worked fine. I know this is a little bit involved but it fixed my problem. Check out the web site (just copy the address into your URL area up top (after you delete the current one, and hit go) as it has all the info needed. Hope you can get it to work.

Jon,
Thanks for the effort. I'm at home now so don't have your e-mail yet but thanks anyway. Yeah, learned something today about ASPI files. Thanks for your lead before.

Thanks Randy,

This was a rare bit of support I got from MGI - when I was working with "The Dark Side" VW5 software. I do have the ASPI checker and run it just to ensure myself all is well with the World. And, yes all my ASPI drivers have the same date etc etc.

However the link you shared with us, did help me to more fully understand what is actually going on. Thank you.

I've "posted" a query "Ripple- On Ripple-Off. Video Overlay using text?" about ripple and text editing.

Boy, am I late...

Anyway... been away from this forum for a bit, but I'm glad to see you guys got it all figured out.

Randy-
When you posted that you had Windows ME check your ASPI drivers, I was gonna respond to reinstall them because ME can't be sure if they are the latest drivers or not. Glad you figured it out.

Thanks Vince. Yeah, learned alot about APSI in the last couple of days. Had no idea that these existed previously so this has been a very valuable session. So, where's your next creation for Chienworks site? I just uploaded a Saudi show and am about to shoot a pin-on ceremony Friday for a friend being promoted. It never ends. Keeps me out of trouble.
Later,
Randy
