low framerate with preview using dual VGA card

I recently purchased a Matrox dualhead AGP card so that I can have a full screen preview and larger workspace. I got it all set up and the additional space is great except that when I preview at project size, the framerate drops to between 11 and 14 fps. I have a 40gb 5400 hard drive that holds all files and my OS (W98), (I read in previous posts that having them work off the same HD may cause Framerate problems). I did defrag my hard drive and I am running my preview in "preview quality". The only way that I can preview at 29fps is to drop the size of the preview window. My rendering is coming out fine, I just am having problems with the preview. Any ideas?

The larger the preview rate, the lower the frame rate. That is normal. The more layers you are asking VV to composite, the lower the frame rate. It all has to do with how hard you are working the bus and the CPU. Dual monitors also have an effect on the frame rate because they require data to be moved and processed. If you are only dropping to 11-14fps with a full project size preview and dual monitors then you are probably doing well.

How fast a machine are you running? With track motion effects, I get down to 5 fps at project size with a 2ghz machine with 1 gb of Ram.
