Lower Field Order doesn't look right

OK Here is my problem.

For some reason, when I export video from vegas, no matter what codec i'm using, if I keep the Field Order on Lower Field First, the video looks like it needs to be deinterlaced or something because it has all these jagged lines around the edges of objects in the video. I do not understand this. Also, If I do a full preview instead of auto, i get the same jagged line effect inside of vegas.

I can't figure out what the problem is. If I export with Progressive Scan instead of Lower field, the video looks GREAT. But everyone I know uses lower field and it looks fine. Any suggestions/comments would be so helpful.

If you are vieweing these files on a computer monitor, then you will see the interlace artifacts. If you watch this same material on a television, it will look just fine. Televisions are interlaced, computer monitors are not, they are progressive scan.

Thanks John.

I understand what you mean by that, but my friend uses Vegas and apparantely he doesn't see the interlace artifacts on his computer monitor. Assuming you are right though, should I export with progressive scan or lower field? Is progressive not as good quality as lower?

Thanks

DV is always lower field first. As long as your output is to be viewed on a television, don't worry about the interlacing artifacts on the computer monitor. And, no, progressive is not as high a quality as interlaced. (At least when you are starting with interlaced footage to begin with.) When Vegas is set to 'Preview" quality in the preview window, it will not show the interlacing artifacts, when it is set to 'Best", it will.

One more thing John.

Say I want the video to look good on PC and I don't care about how it looks on television, how should I export it then???
