M JPEG help

thebrain900 wrote on 6/28/2008, 10:56 AM
I have a Canon sd9000 and it takes vido and it says it is an AVI File.

But when I go to inport it into my Movie Studio 8.0 just the Audio goes into the timeline.

Does this mean I need what they called an M - JPEG CODEC?? or am I not understanding something?? And if I do need a CODEC can I get it and use it for free??

PS....I can play the video ok in my Power DVD Program so I must have a CODEC for it and I thought if you had the CODEC to play something it goes booth wasy you can you the same CODEC to open or compress something??

Please update your Vegas to 8.0d version and then come back here to tell us if it worked. MJPEG AVI was added in the subsequent versions. The update is free.

It's amazing how many people come here with such questions but they don't seem to upgrade their version first to the latest freely available version.

Oh, come on. You are on this forum for 3+ months now, you have experienced updates, and you learned nothing to be asking things like "and ware do I go for it anyway?". Can you not think a bit? And you can't even open your eyes to see the sticky that's called "vegas updates" on this sub-forum? I would not be so abrupt if you were a newbie around here, but you have posted many questions (some of them silly because you didn't bother to read the manual), and I know you are a regular here. You should have known about updates by now, but even if you didn't, you should have known where to find them. They are on this very site. There is a glaring menu on the top that reads "downloads" and "updates" you know.

So, you go here http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/updates and you download it and you install it directly, no need to uninstall the previous version.

I also happen to have a canon photocamera (the A590IS), which records movies in the avi format. VMS 8d recognises the video instantly.

Hi James,

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.

It is possible that the AVI file is actually a motion JPEG video stream. If this is the case, a direct show MJPEG codec must be installed on your PC in order for these clips to be imported into a Sony Creative Software timeline. The following manufacturers produce Motion JPEG codecs:

Pegasus Imaging: http://www.pegasusimaging.com/picvideomjpeg.htm
Morgan Multimedia: http://www.morgan-multimedia.com
MainConcept: http://www.mainconcept.com/codecs.shtml

If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident.

Sincerely,

Eric D.

Why should I have to spend more money to run a avi file that works and plays on my pc with no problems but only plays audio when it is imported to Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0?

I have a Canon Powershot A40 that takes video clips and stores them as M-JPEG files. I had the same problem you describe with VMS 3.0b. I downloaded and installed both of the Trial versions of VMS 8.0d and VMS 9.0 and the problem went away. (I am purchasing 9.0). I was told the M-JPG problem experienced by many users up to 8.0d led to that fix. Perhaps the fix Sony employed didn't get your camera model. Prior to upgrading when I was having that problem, on occasion I had used the Morgan codec and it worked OK. Back then I was able to download a trial version of the Morgan codec to see if it solved my problem and it did. You could do likewise If it solves your issue, I'm sure the website will be glad to sell it to you. Just Google "Morgan M-JPG codec".

There are plenty of free codecs out there, you should be able to find one that will work. May take a little Googling.

Option is to change your clip into something that you can handle. I use "Super".

Hi James
Totally agree about your comment about why spend money to run file that works on pc but not in MS. I very much like the look of MS (albeit not able to use it yet!) but think Sony could be a bit more upfront and helpful over this issue particularly to new users of this type of product like myself.
Are you up and running now with these AVI files in MS? Which of the sites and/or codecs did you use in end? I've looked at sites suggested but got confused over all the apparent codec download options available. Also did you end up paying for a suitable codec?
Thanks
Andy

No I have not downloaded anything yet. But since I received my copy of Vegas 8 Platinum the day before Vegas 9 came out , I called sony and they agreed that I should have been offered to upgrade to Vegas 9 so they are sending me Vegas 9 Pro and they told me that the right codec is included in Vegas 9, I will receive it this Fri and let you know if it works...

Paleale

If not I will try The morgan codec, it did work on my old pc
