m2ts editing with vms 8

I have a sony hdr-sr7 and I use the tools that came with the camera to import the .m2ts files to my HDD. I have Sony VMS 8 and I'm trying to edit the .m2ts files and render them in mpeg2 for use on a standard dvd. I know I'm losing quality this way but I only need standard DVD for now. My problem is after I render the .m2ts files to mpeg2 using the mainconcept codec. I take the finished mpeg2 files and open it in the VMS 8 timeline and I have horizantal lines everywhere, especially with motion. I also tried to render as a uncompressed .avi file and get the same results. The original .m2ts files don't have any vertical lines when played in the timeline. My ultimate goal is to find a good work flow for taking the .m2ts files and editing them, then rendering them for burning in standard DVD format, with the best quality that can be expected.

Do you mean that these horizontal lines are just "interlacing"? Check here if this fixes your problem:

The files appear to be interlaced. mpeg2 mainconcept files *should* be interlaced, assuming you've used one of the DVD Architect templates, because this format assumes its destination to be DVD. Why are you bringing the mainconcept mpeg2 files back into Vegas? Once they're in this format, you should import them into DVD Architect to burn them as-is onto DVD, rather than attempting to do anything further with them in Vegas.

Your workflow should be -
import .m2t files into vegas,
edit away, la la la
when done editing, render to mpeg2 using the DVD Architect template (or using the "make DVD" button, which does the same thing)
Open DVD Architect
Burn DVD.

I have another question if it's not too much to ask. I'm wanting to edit my .m2ts files and then burn them to a dvd with a standard dvd format so that they can be played on a standard DVD player and TV. Would my best workflow be to convert the .m2ts files to .avi for editing then render in mpeg2 for dvd? Or would you suggest something else? Also uncompressed .avi is very large, what would be the best codec to use when converting to .avi?

You don't need to convert to .avi, the .m2t is an editing format anyway. You just load the .m2t to edit, you export in mpeg2 to save to DVD, and you keep your m2t project files in tact, so in the future, when you have money to buy an HD burner, you can export to the right format for high def DVDs too.
