O.K. Got off my lazy butt and did some looking. (Actually, I did some looking while firmly planted on my lazy butt.)

It looks like all I need to do is change the file extension from .mp4 to .m4v.

It seems to work fine, but I wonder... Does this open any other cans of worms?

No other worms. M4V is Apple's name for MP4 with chapter support.
Otherwise the extensions are interchangeable. Some devices will not play M4V or vice versa, but will play the same file if you change the extension.

From Wiki on .m4v:

"The differences are the optional Apple's DRM copyright protection, and the treatment of AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio which is not standardized for the MP4 container."

If your client is happy, end of story.

So movie rips with AC3 soundtrack should be .m4v then?

That's really outdated info from wiki.
The AC3 is the same regardless of the extension. All of my TV shows end up MP4/AC3 passthrough.
The drm on iTunes was dumped years back, as well.
