First, I'd like to say that I switched from Cakewalk's Pro Audio to Vegas a couple of years ago. I didn't need the MIDI sequencing, and Vegas offered a more streamlined interface, which increased my productivity. In fact, ACID and Sound Forge have all increased my productivity. When I switched, I thought I would never look back...
I agree that being able to use a control surface with Vegas or ACID would be wonderful. Given their track record, I just don't believe that Sonic Foundry would spend the time to implement MMC in order to support a control surface. I'd probably turn into some slobbering fool if they actually incorporated full MMC support into their next release of Vegas or ACID. I'd probably also go broke buying the new Mackie Control.
I also want to say that I've been seriously thinking of moving to Cakewalk's SONAR for a while now. I don't want to -- I LOVE VEGAS. But after reading the press release from Mackie regarding their new control surface, I've added another pro to SONAR (Works with Mackie Control) and another con to Vegas (Lacks MMC Support).
I have a very sneaky suspiction it's coming very soon.
If you want to get into the "Pros" and "Cons"...start to look at the "Pros" a little more.
Who else has CD burning capabilities direct from the timeline, where you can drag and drop CD track markers as you please within a multi-track environment?
Who else can edit "Video and audio" in UNLIMITED amounts and then burn a VCD or export as a DVD format?
Who else has audio Scrub functions and edit "slip" abilities?
Who else has a "Trimmer" window in the same application?
Who else can right click on an audio event and have it open it in your favorite stereo editor and it is automatically highlighted within the seperate application?
SOME may have SOME of these features, but NONE of them do it quite as graceful as VEGAS. I would expect the same quality and intuitiveness when Vegas finally does implement a hardware control surface as the rest of their functions. I imagine the reason is because they don't rush it and do it half assed like SONAR or CUBASE or Nuendo.

I agree. I use Vegas for the simplicity of it's design. You're on the money with this one: no other program has as fluid interface as Vegas, and the integration with Forge is exemplary. A control surface would be icing on the cake (and ice on my wrists!).
But as a composer, I just can't do without MIDI. I'm still a big Logic user for content creation. Sequencing wavetables, automating FX and printing out scores are part of my daily routine. So I use both.
Like I said, I LOVE VEGAS. But I do find myself comparing it to other software to see just where it stands. In my opinion it's way ahead of its competition, but still lacks a few features that could push it so far ahead that the competition could never catch up. One of those features is MMC.
I can only imagine just how much more work I could get done with a control surface like the Mackie Control.

Errr, well, as I've tried to point out various times on this and the Sound Forge board, this used to be the case, but it ain't happening with Sound Forge 6. REALLY very annoying. Is/was a very handy feature of the Vegas/Forge combo.
Anyone know if an update is in the pipeline? I submitted the bug to SoFo, but received no response...
Well, not on my system George - Vegas 3 and Sound Forge 6. With SF 4.5 and 5, the selection would always be highlighted, but this doesn't happen with SF 6. Am I the only one then?
Did you install SF6 after you installed Vegas? Since, 3.0C Vegas will look to see if SF6 is installed and use that as the default editor and will show up under the menu item. You may need to goto the preferences and set it there if not. It is found under the "prefered editor" selection.
I wish Sonic Foundry would confirm (or deny) that they were (or were not) working on MMC support for Vegas and/or ACID. I know I'm not the only one who would love to have a Mackie Control for use with Vegas and/or ACID.
