Mackie Control in multiple instances of Vegas

It is apparently not possible to use Mackie Control in a second instance of Vegas 5b, even if External Control is disabled in the first. The Options > External Control menu item doesn't even show up in the second instance of Vegas.

It would be nice if the external control could be closed in the first instance (for example while rendering) and then opened in the second instance, to continue working on another project using the Mackie Control. As it is now, I either have to close all Vegas instances and then restart Vegas with the other project, or at least close projects, and reopen the other project that needs the Mackie Control in the first instance of Vegas. Not a big problem, but it could be more convenient.

The optimum would be to enable Mackie Control to be used in both instances...switching automatically to the active instance, just as a ShuttlePRO switches itself to the active program. Yeah, I know it's more complicated since the external control displays and fader positions would have to be updated at every change of program focus. But maybe not TOO difficult.

The engineering team is aware of this. I don't know what's involved in making this work or if it even can be done. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

If you use the newer Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) CueMix Console software, which allows you to use the Mackie Control to control your audio interface output levels (among other things), then you have the option share the Mackie Control between the CueMix Console and other applications on your computer. There's a mode in CueMix where the Mackie Control will ... well, control whatever application has focus or is in the foreground.

I imagine that if MOTU could make it work, then so could Sony.
