I've never rendered anything over a few minutes in length with my MB but 4 days sounds a little excessive to me. You should write to the folks at MB and ask them what they think. I have written to them several times and each time they have gotten back to me extremely fast with great info.

Good luck,

it really can take that long ...

scottshackrock wrote on 3/9/2005, 8:24 AM
MB will do that...

But I mean, if you're making a 90 min. project with MB on it the whole time, it must be pretty important and you put a lot of work into it - so 4 days of render is worth it! ha.

why don't you use Celluloid Reelpak1? that's what I use and it's a lot faster than MB.

It's about 80 percent faster.

Magic bullet is a render hog. The new version of the "suite" offers a render farm option that would help to take the load off. But there are options out there. You can download the free "film looks for vegas" pack as a starting point. It uses native Vegas filters. You can also try out the Vegas ported version(s) of BigFX FilmFx from Zenote.

Another, more expensive, method is to get the Red GL plugin for Vegas and use that as an AE adapter and use Digital Film Lab. They just updated it to version 2 and I am not sure if it works now using this method. The older verson does work fine - I have done it. Render time is fast and, IMO, DFL outputs a lot nicer look.

The other option is to use both Vegas and After Effects. Just frame serve out of Vegas to After Effects and use any plug-in you wanted - MB, FilmFX, DFT, Cinelook or whatever.

That stuff from Digital Film Lab 2 looks great!
Now, I'm not able to check this out right now, but you're sayig that this would plug directly into Boris Red 3.x and can be used as though it were in AE?? I know I've heard about AE filters being used in Red, but havn't had the chance to try this yet.
Any chance Aaron Hurley's original FilmFX plugs into Boris. I used to LOVE that prog, and was very dissapointed when it wasn't ported into Vegas the same way I was used to seeing it. FilmFX was a sweet plug. Very useful and deep.

I'll also plug Celluloid here, as it offers the exact looks of the magic projectile without the render times. Plus it can convert 4:3 to wide, as well as a few other functions. Edward Troxel has a similar film-looks tool too.

Magic Bullet is slower, but it also does a number of processes that Celluloid and Edward's tools don't do, as they are script-based, whereas Magic Bullet is not.

Correct - but I only speak for another version - not DFL 2. Red GL works with some AE plugs, but not all. Digital Film Lab is one that is did work with, couldn't key frame it so you were more or less stuck with one setting at a time.

>>>Any chance Aaron Hurley's original FilmFX plugs into Boris.<<<
I am not sure - I think I tried it, but I am not sure if it worked. If I recall one part worked but the other did not. Part of the issue I had with Red is that you could do one thing, but not two as far as Vegas went. If I tried to load up anything other than Red it would default - knock out whatever I had done in Red. So BigFX FilmFX has 2 parts in AE land - one is the color the other is the "look". So from what I can recall I think I could get the color part working but not the look part. But as it has been a while I can not be 100% sure.

I agree. But on the other hand when I discovered DFT I sort of was swayed away from it. One thing I do still really like about BigFX FilmFX is the stock emulation. But now with stock being less and less grainy and more stuff being shot digital it seems to be more about cleaning up footage (The new Film Fix software comes to mind) and less about maiking digital stuff "dirty" unless is is purely used for an effect.

Spot - will Celluoid let you alter the looks or are you pretty much stuck with the looks that come with it? The cool thing about MB is that you can actually see how the effect looks on your footage as soon as you add it to the timeline and if you need to tweak it a little...you can. With Celluiod - you can't...unless there's someway to do it that I'm not aware of. Also, MB has many more varieties of looks than Celluiod right?

I have MB installed now as well as the trial of Celluiod. If Celluiod were a little more versital, I would certainly consider upgrading to the paid version.....whatever the cost.

Celluloid offers MORE options than MB, because of how it utilizes plugs. You can also see what you are doing the second you drop it on the timeline. Celluloid has 21 filmlooks at this time, with more coming soon.
There is a free 14 day demo of Celluloid, but it only includes 6 free filmlooks. For $35.00, it's pretty inexpensive.

Spot - I wasn't aware that you could go in and manipulate the settings after you drop the "looks" on the timeline - my bad. That of course makes it much more versatile then I previously thought. And I agree....$35 is very generous for a product like this. It's also good to hear that more looks are in the works. I will be purchasing the product this evening.

Hi Spot. Could you please clarify something for me? Is it possible to just get Celluloid and Reel-Pak-1, and use them OK inside Vegas 5, without having to buy Ultimate-S?

Thanks,

Richard Hunter

Yes, it is....I just bought it and am playing with it now.

Edit: Sorry, I'm not Spot but just thought I'd answer since I'm here :)

Thanks Gonzoman. I forgive you for not being Spot! (There can be only one, right?)
