Magix issues that will hurt it's Vegas user base size unless addressed

I've been using Vegas since version 6, so I this is based on what I've observed over time. Most of the issues below are since Magix has taken over.

Let's begin with the upside. As for development of the program, I have been very pleased with were Vegas has come from and looks like it is going. That being said:

Upgrade policies. The idea that you can only install upgrades to your current version of Magix software and then have to pay to continue upgrading the current version because of an imposed free upgrade time limit is absolutely ludicrous. I don't have a single other professional program I use that does this.

Next, what happened to the great tutorials that used to go in depth on features and the program? What's available now is a joke in comparison to when Sony owned it. This came up because my wife is starting a youtube channel and needs to learn editing. Had to shake my head at the drop in quality for tutorials compared to when Sony had the program.

As for upgrades to new versions. First, I tried the subscription service and that was a joke. It installed wrong versions of programs when upgrading. When I followed tech supports advice on correcting things, it then caused problems with the 3rd party plugins that took more time and emails to resolve. After 2 years I was sick of the issues, cancelled the subscription, and bought 18 at the point where I could get 19 for free.

Enjoyed all the features. BUT, the fact AMD support had been pulled was a major issue for me. Now that it's coming back, it's buggy as can be. It seems Magix is blaming the AMD drivers yet . . . other editors are not having these issues with the same driver Vegas is struggling with. I checked their forums.

With all of the above, I'm now taking a serious look at switching to Resolve. Huge change in workflow, but the deficiencies with Magix I've listed here are not present. They have great in depth tutorials, some were commercial lessons that have been made available for free. Updating current versions are no problem, I was shocked that if you buy the studio version, upgrades to new versions have, so far, never been charged for. Part of the reason for this is because Black Magic makes money off their hardware and includes Resolve for free. It could change in the future. I don't begrudge Magix charging for upgrades to new versions, as you have to pay for the development.

Possible downsides to Resolve? Compared to POST, Resolve doesn't include an image editor, nor does it include a streaming program. I consider these minor issues as I have image editors and their Fusion effects program includes features POST doesn't have. Plus OBS studio is much more powerful than Vegas streaming and is free. Also, I already am familiar with it, so Vegas streaming is a non factor to me. Many other people are in this situation too. How about including a way to make Vegas work seamlessly with OBS instead of reinventing the wheel?

So Magix, If you want to keep your current customers, you need to address the upgrade issue for current versions. You also need to improve your hardware support and software tutorials. You need a set of IN DEPTH tutorials that are available for free to get new people started, or for people upgrading from Edit to POST.

Resolve is making in roads because of the free version, even into the Final Cut and Premiere Pro user base. In my opinion, for basic editing and transitions Vegas is much easier to use. Although Vegas has some upsides to it, you need to address these other issues to continue to grow.

Hi,

Upgrade policies. The idea that you can only install upgrades to your current version of Magix software and then have to pay to continue upgrading the current version because of an imposed free upgrade time limit is absolutely ludicrous. I don't have a single other professional program I use that does this.

It would be ludicrous if it were true; it's not and for as long as I have been using Magix products (more than 10 years), never has been.

If you select Upgrade and click on the "Information regarding the upgrade," this is what you will see:

You can upgrade at a reduced price with a previous version or other authorized product. Please have your login details or serial number ready.

It does not have to be the last version, any previous version is good. When you log in, Magix knows what you have.

@sam-walker I just learnt the other day that Resolve offers free updates for life, that was a surprise & yes that is good but Every piece of software i have ever bought has only ever supplied one yr's free updates with it's licence, after that yr has expired you have to pay for an upgrade, I've had Magix software since 2004, & plenty other software over the last 20+ yrs.

Please name the other software you have that continually gives you free updates?

I'm wary of this sort of thing after ManyCam, who also promised the same, backed out of that, rewrote historical documentation to hide the fact that they'd ever offered it, and then claimed that if it had ever existed it only applied to the lifetime of a specific version, and since they'd moved onto a new version all lifetime licencees lost their licences. To be clear here, not suggesting that Resolve might do the same at all, just saying I personally am currently wary of such deals ...

... Resolve offers free updates for life ...

That would have to be daVinci Resolve Studio - the paid version. But as was noted as a downside to Black Magic Design's (BMD) Resolve very recently on this forum - there is no Resolve My Account to record your serial number - unlike with MAGIX/Vegas. So if you lose your SN, you'd have to buy it again.

Also, there's a unique difference between BMD and other NLE software companies including Vegas/MAGIX which allows BMD to make the lifetime offer, and that is that BMD's primary business focus is hardware, not software. In that regard, daVinci Resolve is somewhat of a loss-leader.

I don't get the support being pulled for AMD thing. Never heard that.

AMD Radeon drivers have bugs that affect Resolve and Vegas, you can see recent known issues and fixed issues lists for that. Buggy drivers are nothing new for AMD, sadly.

About AMD drivers. Yes, the "optional" 22.7.1 wasn't good, and it was an optional driver "update", not a recommended WHQL. Yes, it didn't work well with Vegas. It's the same with 22.8.2, "optional" and not WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs). These are not signed and tested drivers. At this moment, the only WHQL driver is 22.5.1, and it is working fine on my computer.

So, you take your chances with the "optional" drivers. I tried 22.8.2 but it did invert some colors, so it was removed from my computer and I reverted back to 22.5.1.
