Main Concept - MPEG 1

I've just encoded a Radiohead video into the MPEG 1 format using the Main Concept encoder.

I have to say, I was completely blown away by the picture quality......could hardly tell the difference from the .AVI (a little darker, perhaps?)

I then took it over to a mates house to show him the wonders of this encoder, and? It looked horrid on his PC, Blocky? Oh yes.

I've come to the conclusion that my PC must use the Main Concept decoder to play back the file using some sort of procesing to make it look this good.......

One question....WHAT IS THE POINT IN THAT? Sneaky, if you ask me.....

No, there's nothing sneaky going on. Although we feel that the MainConcept decoder does provide optimal quality for any MPEG material, it's not required to play back files that were generated using the MC encoder.

As for what you saw at your friend's house, it's hard to answer without knowing what decoder is installed there. At your friend's house have you tried playing back something that was created with another encoder? If so, are the results similar?

well, maybe I was a little harsh when I said "horrid",
it's still good when you consider the copression involved.

I just thought i'd come across a wonder encoder, and was a little disappointed when I saw the results on another PC (Without the MC decoder)

It doesn't look "horrid" at all, just, average.....looks supurb on my PC though :-)

Thanks for your speedy reply MC!

Did you try to run it off of a CD at your mate's house? That is often the problem. The MPG will try to keep playing even though it is not getting enough from the CD. It will look somewhat blockier than if you ran it from a hard drive.
