Hi,
There currently isn't a guide for the encoder. It's set up so that the templates should provide the best results for most uses, and the other parameters are there for specialized professional uses. Most users won't need to touch the vast majority of controls.
We are looking into the possibility of a guide for it, though.

I was about to ask a similar question also. Just wondering what settings would give the absolute best quality. No matter how long it took to render. For all different sizes, and even for movies small enough to be emailed.
