Main Menu Options

I want to emulate many commercial DVDs which off "Play all" (ie start at the beginning and play through all media until returning to main menu) and "Play episode" (leading to another menu listing individual files each returning to the sub menu for another choice).

I can't seem to figure out how to do this without listing the media twice (once in each menu), in which case I assume it gets rendered and stored on disk twice too...

I'm sure there is a way, but - any advice please

Drag each clip to left box.

Create a playlist and add each to that list. This playlist will be your play all.

Create a submenu. Add a button for each clip. The default end action is to
return to most recent menu.

Just to clarify, you can add a clip to the project multiple times but it will actually get rendered and stored on disc only once.

You can link to a video for practical purposes as many times as you want, and that video will only be burned once to the DVD blank. It can work better if you import the video at the root level of your project rather than importing at the menu level -- it is possible that way to accidentally alter the video enough that DVDA does want to include additional copies.

Playlists work via scripting, meaning a bit more of a delay, and *possibly* filling the player's memory a bit more. Otherwise though they do work fine, and it's the simplest way to join several titles sequentially.

An alternative that is often used for deleted scenes etc. on retail DVDs, might cut down on the scripting overhead, and will give you less delay between titles when played sequentially... Join your titles into one longer video file, add that title to your menu once for play all, & once for each section you'd like to play individually. Then set the start and end plus end action for each individual section.

Another method for controlling how your titles play back is to duplicate titles on the menu page; you can have different end actions &/or scripts etc for each duplicate. Your 1st title might have the 2nd title as its end action, while its duplicate returns to the menu. To hide a button when you need to reduce clutter, set it to text, set the color transparency to 100%, turn off the shadow, then shrink it to the smallest possible size out of the way in the corners or side of your menu -- you're still able to link to it, set individual end actions, scripts, etc, and you have to make sure that button navigation with the remote ignores them.

How do you choose? Depends on how much of a perfectionist you are, your priorities for the project, and how much you want to control what happens when the viewer hits the NEXT or PREV buttons on the remote. For example the PREV button works best if you use one longer video file I think.

See... I said it would be possible! Now I'm spoilt for choice. Many thanks to all.

Hi RCourtney,

"Play all" button is ok! It was easy!
But could not solve yet the "scene selection" button!!!
You said "Add a button for each clip" How this can be done???

Thanks.

I had the same problem recently and based on advice form this forum I solved it. You drag the video file containing chapters to the menu and a thumbnail is formed. You can rename it as "play all". Then right click on it and select "insert scene selection". This automatically produces a submenu with a thumbnail for each chapter. These thumbnails play the whole video file starting at the selected chapter until the end of file. If you do not want this then do not use the "insert scene selection" function. Instead insert a submenu near the "play all" button. Go to that submenu and drag the video file many times into that area. Go into each button and on the timeline mark the start and end points of each chapter. You have to do a little bit of more work, but this will give exactly the result you want. Good luck.

Wow, that's great! It worked! Thanks a lot! I feel myself better now:)
I succeded it as your prescription "Instead insert a submenu near the "play all" button. Go to that submenu and drag the video file many times into that area. Go into each button and on the timeline mark the start and end points of each chapter. You have to do a little bit of more work, but this will give exactly the result you want"
One last question :
My first page appears like this now:
DVD's title.
Play All button.
Scene Selection button
but under this scene selection button,
London,
Paris
Rome
appear! Is there any way to hide that "London, Paris, Rome"?

Can you be more precise? What and where are those words "Paris, London, Rome"? Are they representing chapters? Where are they exactly? Are they on the menu that contains the thumbnails "play all" and submenu?

When I put the DVD on DVD player I see all of them.
Paris, London,Rome are chapters.
When I chose Play All button, DVD player plays all respectively.
When I chose Scene Selection button nothing plays but just under "Scene Selection button" I put, Paris, London, Rome and whatever I chose plays correctly.
I want that "Paris, London,Rome" are to be opened after I select scene selection button?

Firstly, delete the "Scene selection" button. Since it does not do anything get rid of it. Secondly, correct me if I am wrong, these 3 chapter buttons are sitting on the main menu. Delete them. Then click an empty area on the menu, go to "insert" on the main toolbar and select "submenu". Like that your submenu button is sitting near the "play all" button. Double click this submenu button and a new menu page will appear. Now do the file drag and drop on this new menu and the rest as described in my earlier message. This should do exactly what you want.

Bingo:))
I really appreciate your help. I don't know how to thank you but please keep in your mind that you've got friend here in Turkey and whenever you wish to travel here I'll always be at your ease.

The new trick for me was double-clicking the new "submenu".
I used to try repeatedly right-clicking!:

Thanks for everything!
