Vegas 4 comes with
MainConcept MPEG-2 File Format Plug-In
Version 1.0 (Build 684)

to author and/or burn a DVD, yes you have to go to the separate application, DVD Architect.

I expect Sonic Foundry will at some point integrate these two more closely together. For example, I got Vegas+DVD just for the AC3 feature, since I already own an otherwise capable DVD authoring tool (Ulead DVD Workshop).
To generate a DVD with AC3 you have to encode it directly in DVDA (which doesn't give you much control over encoding parameters, that I could find) or you have to multiplex it separately with AC3 using some 3rd-party app. Vegas 4 with the MainConcept plugin can generate MPEG2 video, but only with MPEG audio.

John,

You could add AC3 to your Ulead DVD Workshop if you wanted to:

Are there any plans to change this in near future?
As I know Adobe uses the same technology within Premiere and this MC MPEG-2 plugin is already at version 1.2, 1.3 beta is available and very soon the 1.3 release version will be available. As I also know that with this new versions MC not only built in some additional functionality, but the real important changes were with encoding quality and speed - and thats what is really important.

So SF: Any plans to come out with an actual version of the MPEG encoder?

Thank you
Johannes

Thanks for the information. BTW I tried the new demo from CCE and the quality and speed are worth looking into. This may be a satisfactory encoder until MC or SoFo updates their product.

You can encode AC-3 audio in V4, you just have to do it as a seperate render as audio only. It is pretty quick. You then render the video seperately as well. If you give them the same name, like test.mpg and test.ac3, when you add the video to DVDA, it associates the audio to the video and does not have to re-encode either. There is currently no way to have Video & AC3 audio multiplexed to share the same file.

Have a good day!!!

Originally I was planning to get Ulead's AC3 upgrade. But from the reports I have heard, the Ulead AC3 plugin is buggy. (check the reports on Ulead's DVD WOrkshop forum.)

The version number reported by Vegas for the MainConcept MPEG plugin is the internal Sonic Foundry version number. It has nothing to do with the version number of the MainConcept SDK that was used to build the plugin.

We will look into including the MC SDK version in the information reported by the Render As | About dialog in Vegas for the MPEG plugin.

Thank you for the information, I was concerned about the low version number. I thought that maybe my installation was picking up some of my earlier settings form VV3.
