Major Issue with Audio Lag (help?)

This forum is great and I have already learned a bunch.

Okay, first quick question. Can I render some video off my Digital video handycam with movie stupdio then just burn it a DVD as an avi data file? THe reason I want to do this is so that I can sotre some of these rendered files elsewhere. THey are so big and I have a lot of video projects I want to work on.

When I go to the Make Movie menu and then go to Make DVD what kind of format is Movie Maker/DVD Architect using? MPEG2 or avi or what. I want the best quality possible and it does not seem like you can change the format.

THis is the most important question I have because I cannot figure out this major problem. When I capture long segments of video there seems to be an audio lag that develops. I have noticed that the lag develops as the video gets captured, so in the beginning there is little to no lag but it gets worse and further behind as the capturing goes on. I have the brand new Sony Vaio and lots of RAM (1 GB) and processor speed (3.0) so I don't think it is that. I also have a new DCR-PC350 Handycam so I hope it is not that. I just can't figure it out and it is driving me crazy.

If you can't tell, I am new at this so thanks for all your help.

1) Yes, you can just burn it ot a DVD as an AVI data file. You'll need to use a different program than Movie Studio, though; most likely your fancy Sony Vaio came with pre-installed disc creation software that will just create a data DVD for you. Keep in mind, of course, that such a DVD will not play in a standalone DVD player.

2) It will render to MPEG-2. That is by definition what is contained on a DVD that will play in a standalone DVD player. Do a search for "best quality" on this forum and you'll find a lot of discussion on this. Suffice it to say that while most people can't see much difference between various MPEG-2 bit rates, you can have control over the bit rate in DVD Architect Studio, but not in Movie Studio using the "Make DVD" option.

3) Can't answer this, but I'll ask a couple questions: What file format are the files you are placing on the timeline prior to doing the problematic render? Are you using Movie Studio to do the capture to .avi from your handycam? Are you including any other file formats in the project?

Thanks a ton for your help but I was using the wrong terminology. The problem is occuring when I Capture not render, sorry. the problem occurs when I am capturing the data from the handycam. Thanks
