there is a way to make yourself a cheap XGA projector with 3000 lumens. Cost about 500 dollars. For more detail go to Tomshardware.com . They have a complete guide there, plus a video to show you the whole process.
It's a pretty old idea actually, Kodak used to (maybe still do?) sell such a unit but only VGA res from memory. Great for guys on the move doing training as there's not too many venues without a OHP.
Bob.
Yeah I remember that unit. I read the article and it make sense. Placed in another room to hide the sound, it could work on the cheap.
I remember as I kid building a projector TV with a portable TV, mirror and a big lens. Required a totally dark room, but I was the only kid with a 6 foot TV. That's back when project cost more than a car.
Problem with using an OHP is the massive light leakage.
The old 640x480 slabs you put on top had a "grate" picture though!
I was doing a presentation in Tokyo many years ago, and had to use the company's OHP. I had never seen this brand/model before, and I thought it was way over the top to call it "Ultrasun".
Then I turned it on...
Holy mackerel, they weren't kidding.
It was absolutely blinding, now that would be the lamp to use for turbocharging your LCD/DLP projector... :O)
A few years back, a friend and I tried building a projector on the cheap for an art project. Holy cow, what a disaster! And he is a serious PhD in math. We had the whole thing worked out—schematics, theory... I was very proud of the design. Spent hours cutting and drilling aluminum in my basement.
I remember when I first tested the bulb in my back yard—every fire extinguisher I could find at the ready. It turned the 3 AM New Jersey night into day. I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t call the police, as they have done in the past because of other “art” projects.
This was a total Home Depot special. Toilet flanges make excellent lens mountings, by the way. Well, my friend turned it on for a few moments and didn’t notice that one of the fans was not operating. Can you say, “fragrant LCD panel soup?”
