What are you using for your source files? Are they DVD-ready MPEGs exported from Sony Vegas?

If not, it could be that the program doesn't have the codecs to do the transcoding.

Yes they are from sony vegas pro 9. They are mpeg4 I believe. Even so I can't get any drop down menu or anything when I click on Make Dvd, it just does nothing but say it's not responding

When I go to update for Architect 5.0, there is nothing there except to download the whole program.

We always provide the entire install package with our updates.

The latest version of 5.0 is 5.0b. Do you have 5.0b? You can find this in the About box from the Help menu of DVDA.

If you're using DVD-ready MPEGs as your source files and the program is still choking, something is very wrong on your machine.

Do you have adequate, defragmented space on your hard drive?

If you are working on a second or external hard drive, have you ensured that the drive is formatted NTFS rather than FAT32 (as they are by default, but which has a file size limitation that often chokes video work)?

Is your operating system up to date and do you have the latest version of Quicktime?

My oper system is win 7 (I upgraded from vista)
I have over 600gb of space on my hard drive, with 8gb of ram
I am working with a external hard drive and it says it is NTFS
My version of Quicktime is ver 7

I had your very same problem, which still persists, in Vegas 8.0 and now in Vegas 9.0c and DA5.0b.

Troubleshooting with Vegas Support (good experience), it turns out that there is a Vegas/DA5 program incompatibility with the Blue ray player supplied in my PC (HP Elite Vista Home Premium 64x). The workaround has been to disable said Blue ray player when doing any work or burning from within Vegas or DA5.

Vegas Support said this bug exists, is on their list to do, and they are working on it.

In general, they recommend to patiently disable either hardware and/or programs one at a time which may clash with Vegas and DA5. In my case, I was lucky and found the clash at the first try. I do not get the Make DVD hang up anymore neither in DA5 or in Vegas 9.0 (if I disable the Blueray player in the PC).

Hope this helps. Cheers.
