Making a crowd fade out?

How do I take a scene with a crowd and then make the crowd slowly fade out showing the same scene but with no one in it? Thanks

You would dissolve from the crowd scene to the same shot with no one in it.

Am I missing a nuance you haven't mentioned?

Lock the camera down on a stable tripod. Film the area without the crowd, then film it again with the crowd. Put the clip with the crowd on the top track, and the clip without the crowd on the track below it. Fade the top track down.

Like Gary said though, they can even be on the same track, just overlap the clips to dissolve or butt it up to the first clip to cut to the next clip.
