DVD Architect cannot do this. You would need to use the program that came with your DVD burner. I believe the latest version of Easy CD Creator or Nero can also do this.
If there are directory/filename "errors;" things that would make it non-ISO compliant, it will not alert you to all the errors. This would include filenames over so many characters long or over so many directories deep (Not really "errors"). It will then attempt to do the backup, but, since there are "errors," it will not actually backup all of the data. It actually goes through all of the motions, taking all the time, but you can have tons of empty directories. You will not realize this unless you check, or attempt a restore.
At least Nero alerts you to any errors, allows you to ignore the issues and do the backup anyway. It then really does the backup. As long as you are reading it on the same file system in which you created it, it will backup and restore just fine. The ISO compliance criteria, I believe, has to do with reading it across *all* OS platforms.
This issue was addressed in the Roxio forums some time ago, and a fix/patch/workaround was never issued. If fact, it seemed to be completely ignored by Roxio alltogether.
I then bought Nero and never had this issue again.
Easy CD Creator has some very nice features...data backup is NOT one of them.
Just a curious question for those who know Nero well:
When i'm creating my disc layout, Nero expands .lnk files on the CD layout to contain everything they link to, including shortcuts that point to Microsoft Bookshelf CDs that i don't have and start menu shortcuts to programs and documents installed outside the Windows directory. This means that if i try to back up my Windows directory of about 600MB, Nero wants to write about 30GB to the disk! So i have to painstakingly hunt through every directory and find the .lnk files and remove them from the layout. I've never seen any other software do this. How do i tell Nero not to do it either? I'd much rather include the .lnk files so that i don't have to recreate them if i have to restore someday. I can't find any reference to this in the help screens or in their website.
