As a complete novice I have loaded 1 hr 40 mins of video onto Vegas and done some editing. before I do more I want to test that I can create a dvd. when I try to (on PAL ans I live in UK) I start by rendering for .mpg then try to burn cd. It says cd not big enough. I am using 4.7GB DVD. (My original movie shot in HD on Sony HDD HD camcorder.

You'll have to play with the bitrate to get that long a movie on a SL DVD. Use a bitrate calculator (Google it) to see what settings you will need. BTW you are mixing the terms DVD and CD, hopefully you are not mixing media.

Bitrate Calculator

Render to DVD using the appropriate DVD Architect PAL template (use widescreen if your video is widescreen). Before starting the render, click on the "Custom" button and change the average bitrate to the number given by the calculator. Do not change the min and max bitrates.

For a one hour forty minute video, you'll want to use a bitrate of about 5,900,000 or slightly below.
