Making a video dvd to be played on a playstaion 2.

A friend from sweden asked me to make her a cd of a movie I edited. She doesn't have a computer at home and she was wondering if I could make one to be able to be played on her playstation2. It's a DVD player and all so I guess I have at least some of what I need, not sure what else. Can anyone recommend what format [mpeg2?], audio[48khz?], and what additional software in conjunction with vegas video, acid, soundforge...would I need. Also what kind of DVD burners are out that I could buy for use with burning DVDs as well as for storage purposes. Its just a 3 1/2 minute promo so it isn't that big of a deal...But I'm sure in the near future these independent movie festivals might require such a format...maybe. Later.

I believe DVD burners are down in price to about $500 now. Pioneer makes one DVR-S201 DVD Recorder. The thing you might want to check, is if you're friends PS2 will playback A DVR. Just because it plays DVD's doesn't necessarily mean it plays DVR's. Just like when CDR's first came into the market, not all CD players would play them. I would hope Sony incorporated DVR playability in the PS2.

I was at computer show last week and a guy was selling "special" playstation CDRs. He said that normal CDRs would NOT play in the playstation. The special ones he had were black in color.
They weren't that much more in money then the generic CDRs so I don't think he was running a scam. If what he says is true, then as fickle DVD players are in general, I don't think a generic DVD-R will work! He said that Sony went with the special disks to try and stop bootleg games from being made.

Has anyone heard a similar story?

Still though what format would I have to be finalizing the avi as...mpeg2-mpeg1-something else...I never done this yet.I think the audio is at 24 bit 96khz or am I mistaken. Any sites I should check out? Thanks.

I believe the Playstation 2 can play DVD-R discs burned using the Pioneer DVR-A03 Rewriter. (I think it's on their compatibility list)

You can also check out other players compatibility at http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

IF the playstation can play generic DVDs and IF the playstation can read DVD-R or CD-R, then you need to create a DVD compliant MPEG video only stream, along with a PCM (or Dolby Digital) Audio stream. You need need to import these files into a DVD authoring program to create a vaild DVD or CD Video image. Simply creating a MPEG file and burning it onto a disk will not work.

Currently Vegas Video does not directly support creating the necessary files you need (maybe a Sonic Tech Rep could prove me wrong). There is no "Template" to simply apply. And the included MPEG encoder really isn't up to what's need to do this (No Variable Bit Rate, No Multi-Pass, No GOP Settings, and so on). But you can, through multiple renders, get files that will work.

Here is a web site selling a mod chip for the PX2. I had to install one in my PSX to be able to play backups on CD-R material. I bought the Pioneer DVD writer recently.
