Making a Video Intro

ChrisAB wrote on 5/27/2012, 8:53 PM
Hi, I'm working on a video intro, I've been working on it for quite a few weeks now, and I still have nothing. I make YouTube videos, and I want to make a good intro to my videos, my name on there is BinaryBattlefield, so what I am trying to do is make 1s and 0s fall from the top left side and slide down and fade into each responding letter, IE B in Binary is 01000010. . . so What I was trying to do was have the numbers fall down in 1 row and form into the B, I've been trying this out for almost 2 months? now and still can't seem to get it right, I've been watching tutorials to learn sony vegas, but it doesn't seem to be helping to much, haha

and as well, Battlefield, I want to do something with like, daggers slicing the screen / a gun shooting the screen / or something cool to type out Battle, and then for field, I'm thinking either just a stamp, or explosion, or something along those lines. . .

Anyone able to help me out?

or does anyone know where I can hire someone to do it for me?

Hi Chris.

Welcome. I've read your post a couple of times, trying to visualise what you're attempting to put together. I think I understand and if I'm on the right track, it's an ambitious first project, as it will require more than simply Vegas to achieve the best results, as explosions etc are more teh domain of particle emitters (e.g Particle illusion) and some of the effects that I think you are looking for would almost certainly be more in the domain of the likes of After Effects or perhaps Boris Red (although I'll leave any comments to much more capable and expert people than me, as I do not use or know either package).

I had a little bit of time and so I put together this rough , quick intro to see if I understand your request - I passed on the slicing swords - would take me a lot longer than the time I devoted to teh attached. Please have a look and let me know if this is (very roughly) where you were heading. It might help attract other more informed colleagues to join in and assist.

OOHHH MAN, That intro was really good, how the heck did you do that so quickly?

that is almost what I am looking for, however, let me add some more info.

I am looking to have the numbers come in at a randomish order, not from left to right, ie

1
110 1
00110
11001
00 10
0

kinda like that, where they are coming down kinda at the same time, but in different orders, and instead of the lettering coming left to right rolling out, more of a fade from the numbers, like as they drop down, they fade away at the bottom, and turn into the letters, so the letters would show up about the same time, as the top digit would hit the bottom.

for the explosion part, I meant more of like, and explosion in the bottom right hand corner where 'field' would sit, and then it appears, like it blows a hole in that corner and once the smoke clears the word is there, or just like a stamp coming down and pressing the word there.

but, man, for like a hours time, that was really good, it took me forever just to figure out how to make the 1s and 0s come down the screen haha. thank you.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the update, I'm trying hard to envisage your description. Is this execution (of the falling numbers) & "binary" word getting closer??

Duncan
ChrisAB wrote on 5/28/2012, 12:32 AM
dude that is so sweet, yea, that is just about 90% there, but instead of the rolling out of the binary, I wanted to try and do 1 letter at a time, like, as the last number hits the bottom that letter shows up. . . I kinda did it, . . I couldn't get it to work properly, I just did a quick one, to kinda show you the idea, I can't really figure out how to get it to work out like I do in my mind

is the video, it kinda is what I mean, but I want the numbers to fall at the same time, and the letters to appear as the last digit falls, but to just appear there and stay, not go away and come back like it does in here. . .

Chris,

Pleased to be able to help a little. Like I said, there's a number of absolute experts on this forum and I am not one of them, but this forum is very helpful and encouraging.

I'm sure that there are a variety of ways to accomplish what you are wanting to do and unfortunately I don't have the time to allocate to provide a polished intro for you to look at. However, you asked how I did this intro so quicly. The numbers are created in one single block using a separate graphics program (I use Xara, [xara.com, about $70) for a large amount of any image work). Simply create the graphics in any graphics package ,(for instance, most might use Photoshop) with a transparent background. Import onto its own video track in Vegas (making sure alpha channel is enabled, so the background of the image retains its transparency). Then use the timeline to adjust the length of time you want the numbers to appear on screen. Use the "track motion" adjustments in the header of this image track to resize the numbers & line up where you want them to be placed on screen. Then insert an empty event (from the "insert" menu at top) and place after the image file on the same timeline. drag this empty event to overlap the image file and the drag a "wipe" transition (wipe bottom to top) onto this overlap.

Insert a new video track and use this to place either a new graphic (e.g the word "binary"), which can be created as before in a graphics program with a transparent background - or alternatively use the generated media tab within Vegas to develop the text and place it. If necessary, use text adjustments like tracking to match the spacing of the letters in the word to the numbers coming down. Also might need to use the "track motion" facility in this video channel to resize the text to align with the numbers cascading don.

Anyway, hopefully you get the idea. Good luck.

Alright! Thank you for the help, I kinda did it, a bit, it's still really bad, but here is what I got

is kinda what I'm getting at, but, better I guess haha, I still have a lot of work to do, just to get the first word down.but that's kinda what I want it to look like, just need to polish it up more, I guess
Duncan H wrote on 5/28/2012, 1:42 AM
No probs Chris, I've sort of got interested, here's a bit more

Enjoy !!

Duncan what if you use the binary = standard text
use Protype titler preset for text and use the standard text gen as a mask
In Pro Type Tiler if you stagger the cascade it the text will come in haphazard = that is = look at the visual it is quite simple the nodes above the line will come in first and the nodes bellow the line will come in last, so you can create as many nodes as characters and create a node for each one and stagger them creating endless fx.

Fade mask out and fade PTT in

apit34356 wrote on 5/28/2012, 2:57 AM
nice example Rory, could you post more about what you have done? Thanks in advance for your time and example! :-)
Rory Cooper wrote on 5/28/2012, 4:03 AM
of course
on track I placed standard text gen 0101010101 to fill the entire text block point size say about 9 pica/ or mm zoomed in and panned bottom to top
used this as a mask for the Pro type titler track 2

track 2 in PTT select the text block up arrow to character block animate the y to suite
then select the cascade settings and in the delay curve make 4 nodes and shift them up and down you will notice the text y movement will now randomize
as per nodes

duplicate PTT = track 3
fade mask track 1 out as you fade track 3 in

e-mail me roryc@tsogosun.com if you want the veg to mess with give you a better idea.
Duncan H wrote on 5/28/2012, 5:24 AM
Hi Rory.

Great work - what can I say? I'd love the veg file please, can you please email to me, let me know if you need my email address again please.

You ask me why I didn't pursue PTT - basically, because I am naive and have never mastered PTT, despite recognising (from your previous posts), that it is a powerful and versatile part of Vegas.

Good news Chris - my plan has worked, we now have some real talent taking part in this thread.

Thanks Rory,

Duncan

My apologies Duncan I did not intend to hijack your discussion.

I sent the veg off
I was enjoying the discussion and seeing in what direction it was heading.

"does anyone know where I can hire someone to do it for me?"

I've got Text Anarchy, a plugin for AE. I bought it when it was going cheap and never really used it. Pretty certain I could do the digital text effect you want with that..for free of course.
Only problemo is I'm a bit snowed under at the moment so offer is only good if you don't need this in a hurry. Like a lot of AE plugins it takes more than a few minutes to learn how to drive them to get the desired result.

Wow that's nice jdw!

I'm going to make a new thread so I can get a killer intro too. I want a Tyrannosaurus Rex with a rocket pack flying through a city belching fire on all the buildings while simultaneously shooting lasers out of its eyes. At the end of the intro the T-rex would point its fire stream into the lens and an "Adam L. Productions" title would be born of the fire, morphing from fiery letters to chrome plated lettering while the rest of the scene fades to black. OH HELL YEAH! lol
DrLumen wrote on 5/28/2012, 11:32 AM
Ooh, Ooh, can I have sharks with laser beams? :)

Nice work though people.

DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG jdw that was so crazy!!!! Man, that was epic, I really liked that a lot, and man, you all are amazing, watching this videos are giving me new ideas, what program did you use to do all that?

I liked how the words formed in, but is there a way to where it doesn't spin in? it just comes out at you?

Duncan, that video was great, it was just there, that was where I was getting at, just trying to get it perfected now, thank you for all the help, watching your videos has actually helped me figure out more how to work Sony Vegas.

Rory Cooper, that was nice! I like how you did that, that was crazy cool, that's actually cooler then my idea, and that

Everyone is coming up with good ideas, and this is crazy, thank you all for the help, I like everyone's ideas, and it is helping me a LOT to figure out what more I want to put into my intro, you guys are amazing
Former user wrote on 5/28/2012, 2:14 PM
Glad you like it. There's no problem leaving off the spin. I used Vegas (8) and Particle Illusion 3.

Here's another quick one using a Matrix "falling letters" type effect. I didn't bother with having the letters line up better with the lines of falling text, but it wouldn't take too long to do... You might want to view the clip at Youtube (at 480). The encoding via the Forum playback looks pretty muddy on my system.

This is fun to watch and reminds me of the good ol' days of these forums when creativity ran amok!

Nice work fellas and CHEERS to you all for taking the time to show your support!
ChrisAB wrote on 5/28/2012, 2:25 PM
I like it, I like it!!!, and I'm getting a great idea just from your two videos, could you try putting them both together? ie

in the second video, you had the falling numbers, could you use that as a background? then use the same way you had the letters appear, but have them appear like you did with the first video, like they appear as those weird symbols and as they come up they go through the changing of the symbols into the words, then at the end, use that blue beam to electrify the words

so kinda, background from second video, lettering showing up like in second video, but the way the letters appeared in the first video, then the blue electricity thingy at the end, can you do that?

and the music from the second video was crazy cool.

EDIT: PI3, is that the one from wondertouch for $389?
Former user wrote on 5/28/2012, 3:13 PM
Yep. PI3 ain't cheap, but it's powerful (and fun) !
