Making Movie - HDV - WMV - Not Working?

Hi. I was ecstatic to get MovieStudio + DVD Platinum today, but on my first attempt to make a movie or render a movie, I can't get it to work. When I select any of the HDV templates in WMV format, and click the NEXT button, it just flashes and nothing happens. No error, no nothing. The original clips were all recorded on the HD-FX1 in 1080i, so I don't know what the problem is.

Anyone else have this problem, or find a solution?

Thank you!

Oh... by the way. When I choose a HDV template and save to AVI, everything works ok, though it took over 2 hours to save a 2 minute clip. (I'm using a P4 2.8ghz HT w/ 1GB RAM). Does this sound right?

I'd really prefer to save it to WMV though, because that's what all my source files are.

We are able to reproduce this problem with WMV HD renders in Movie Studio 6 Platinum and are looking into it.

By the way, why are your source files WMV? What capture application are you using?

WMV is a compressed format and in addition to quality losses in your renders, it will take more time to render because each WMV frame needs to be decoded to render in another format.

The WMV HD templates are all for surround or 24 bit audio. Movie Studio 6 Platinum does not support either of these audio formats, the maximum is 16 bit stereo.

Workaround: Create your own custom templates that use the Windows Media Audio 9 codec (not Pro).

1. Select the HD template in Render As and click Custom
2. Click the Audio tab
3. Select "Windows Media Audio 9" from the Format dropdown
4. Choose a bitrate/sample rate/channels setting from the Attributes dropdown. Set it to one of the settings at the bottom of the list for the best results.
5. Type in a new name in the Template edit field, update the description, and click the Save button (looks like a floppy disk).
6. Click OK to return to the Render As dialog.

Now you can use that template for your HD renders.

I made a small project (1' 20") from .m2t file captured using Movie Studio from my HC1 and got the same error when I tried to make Windows Media Video using Make Movie. I then rendered it as HDV 1080 50i intermediate (3-4 mins) with no problem except that it plays 4:3 in WMP9. I then rendered as PAL DV Widescreen in similar time and it works OK. I then tried Render As Windows Media Video (Default Template) and it worked but took about 16 mins. There does appear to be a bug but somehow I tricked it into working probably by one of my previous actions. Hope this helps track it down.
