Making The Switch From Premiere

I’ve been editing with Premiere for three and a half years and lately I’ve been playing around with Vegas. It’s time for me to upgrade my computer( ie get a new one) and I’m thinking about making the switch to Vegas. I must have a preview out to TV. Which video cards should I look at or will I need to use a video camera with loopthrough? Currently I have a JVC DVL300 as a slave deck that doesn’t have loopthrough capability.
I don’t really want to buy another camera. I’m really excited about Vegas and any advice you can give on computers or getting a preview out to TV would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!

There are several Firewire-to-video convertors out. I use the Canopus ADVC-100 to output to a monitor, and to capture analog footage when required. FWIW, I didn't use Premiere as long as you, but was sure glad to be rid of it when I switched to Vegas.

Previewing on an external monitor is done through a firewire connector not your video card. Many new computers come with a firewire port build in or you can buy a cheap card for around $30 or so. Only requirement is it is 100% compliant with the firewire IEEE 1394 standard. You next need a digital to analog convertor. It can be a black box like the Canopus or any digital camera that supports firewire. The question gets asked a lot. All the firewire card does is provide the interface between the computer, convertor/camera and your external monitor which can be a ordinary TV. You still need some device that converts digital to analog that is connected between the computer and monitor. That can be a free standing device like the Canopus or almost any of the newer cameras.

Unless you happen to live in Europe where most DV camcorders come with the DV-in disabled.
