Managing large numbers of events (SMSP 12)

So right now I have the basics down fairly well and I'm working on my most ambitious movie yet. Although it will only be 10-15 minutes total, it will have around 50 events synced to a music soundtrack. I now seem to be tripping over my own events in my timeline as I sort them out. With only a single monitor available at the moment, I find the trimmer to be a bit cumbersome. Any tips on keeping media and events orderly when their numbers start getting larger?

Thanks in advance.

OK so I'll ask a different way.

After trimming an event, is there a way to store it in the Project Media window for later insertion on the timeline? I'm using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 (SMSP 12).

Thanks,
Gary

There are 3 things that can help you:
1) media library contains every media you added to project
2) media library contains bins where you can sort out your media files/subclips
3) trimmer has "create subclip" button that allows you to put trimmed portion into subclip and name this subclip as you wish, then you can put this subclip to whatever media bin you want

Having 50 events on the Timeline is far from excessive. I often have several hundred and seem to be able to handle these with ease.

Are all your events placed on the Timeline before you start editing? I usually add my shots one at a time and edit as I go but leave any fine adjustments to match the sound to the end.

Have you tried zooming in on the Timeline? Use your mouse wheel or the +/- markings beneath the Timeline to give a much larger selection to work with.

Warper -

Very helpful. Thats exactly what I was looking for! Without a 2nd monitor I had avoided the trimmer, but now I see that its worth using regardless. I also wasn't aware of the ability to use bins for organization. Huge tips. Thank you very much!

Richard -

Prior to today I had been doing all my editing on the timeline, yes. My current project is such that I could re-order video clips many ways. Therefore I am experimenting with the order a lot. Because of that, I was in a situation where I would move short video events around just to get them out of my way while I tried out new sequences. I should add that I am syncing video events with every measure of the song (about every 3-4 seconds). At my current skill/knowledge level, that's a lot of syncing. I was aware of the zoom feature and have been using it already for this, but appreciate you asking.

Thanks again!

I appreciate your problem in managing events - but unless you get to a project where 200-300 events over a span of runtime in 10 minutes is not uncommon. Many techniques are available in VegasPro including nesting timeline info and digital intermediate codecs are great help long before media libraries play a role.

Just a concept note, but the appearance of heavy syncing will just produce a video of a bouncing ball. You may want to relax a little to make a more engaging presentation. That in itself should help!
