Map line effect

ericlast wrote on 11/29/2006, 2:39 PM
I once created a transition effect like in the old Indiana Jones flicks, where a line would get drawn on a map to show progression of a trip. It worked great in the past, using a transition between a graphic of the map without the line, and a second graphic with the line inserted. I'm trying to create the same effect in a new travel video. but I can't remember how to do it...Can anyone talk me through my senility and remind me how to create this effect?

I've done this too! From memory, I used a long linear wipe transition from the unmarked map to the marked one. I seem to remember that Chienworks wrote an app for making animated maps - I'll see if I can find a link.

Yes, that's it!!!
Linear wipe (right to left) between the two map images works perfectly!
Thanks!

How do I change it from a .mlr file to an .avi file to use in VMS?

.mlr is kinda like .vf ... it only contains the project, not the video. There is a render function that saves a sequence of .bmp stills that you can then import into Vegas.

Thanks to Chienworks (Kelly) for the mapliner.
Great program !!.

I just used it for a longer journey with several stops and where I wanted the map with the progressing line before the videoclips from each city - so the total of nearly 700 .bmp files took up plenty of space on the harddisk.

So I opened an empty VMS job, threw all the .bmp's to its Project media - then selected them all and put them to the timeline.
Then I rendered this to a video with same template as the video, that I was making.
Now I could delete all .bmp's.

Then I opened another empty VMS job and put the mapliner-video to its timeline - and having this VMS job open parallel to the VMS with the video I was editing it was easy to split and copy/paste the appropriate mapliner-parts from the one VMS job to the other where needed.

That Mapliner thingie is fabulous.

Wish I had known about it three weeks ago when I did my Kilimanjaro trek movie.
