Saw AVIATOR a couple of nights ago and enjoyed it more than all the other (ten) movies I got out to see over the holidays. Would highly recommend. The discussion sounds interesting - will try to check out.

I tried to see The Aviator tonight, but it was sold out.

A couple of years ago, they had a revival of Mean Streets for the 25th Anniversary. I think they made a new print for the DVD release. It played a week here and I went on the last night on kind of spur of the moment. I got there five minutes before the screening and got a ticket. When I went in I saw that they had a podium set and Scorsese would be speaking after the screening.

The event was sold out and I only got a ticket because three rows of seats were reserved for the sponsor of the event and after they showed up, they released some more tickets. One of the luckier days of my life.

It was pretty damn cool. Scorsese said some scenes in the movie were shot right near the theater. He also said he was inspired to make the movie after he had shown his previous film to John Cassavetes. The film, Boxcar Bertha was a Bonnie and Clyde ripoff for Roger Corman. Cassavetes told Scorsese that if didn't make a personal films, he would be making a genre movies for the rest of his life. Cassavetes is a big influence for Scorsese, who has talked about his style as the formal camera work of Orson Welles with the emotional directness of the acting in Cassavetes.

I liked it as well.

Howard Hughes was pretty messed up. I guess with genius comes potential problems.
