Mask Generator disables Soft Contrast?

Working on a wedding video & it always needs a soft contrast in every scene almost. I created a Mask Transition scene for obvious reasons, but this created a problem..

The Color Grading & Soft Contrast becomes disabled (even tho the plugins show they are still on) when I add the Mask (in the pan & crop preview).

This creates a choppy job on a transition & does not look like there is a way I can fix this.

Does anyone else face this issue?

If there is no specific suggestion to get around this problem, there are workarounds which should work which shouldn't be all that onerous if this is a one-off transition (though I don't know what the obvious reason is).

1. Do the transition with the two video events without any VFX/color grading added, render the result to a new 'combined' video event and then add the VFX/color grading to the render; or

2. Add the VFX (i.e. color grading and soft contrast) to each of the two video events, render each video event separately to new video events with VFX/color grading included, and then do the transition bwteen those 2 new video renders.
