Matching 60p and 24p

Hi There,

I'm shooting true 24p on my Sony for the majority of my footage.

Occasionally, I'd like to shoot 60p.

I've just gotten a GoPro camera that shoots all kinds of footage: 1080p at 30fps, 960 at 48fps, 960 at 30fps, 720 at 60fps, 720 at 30fps, and a few others that I'll never use.

Do any of you have any tips, suggestions, or comments on how to make the non-24p shots look like the 24p shots in Vegas Pro?

I'm new to digital, so anything you say will be helpful.

Thanks,

BT

You can't make them look like 24p, they will feel like something else when played back. Personally, I only use 30p and 60p for slow motion, slowed down to 24p exactly (0.800 and 0.400 slow down factor respectively). If you are going to just drop them in a 24p timeline, you must never forget to "disable resample" in the whole timeline before you export, or you will get ghosting.

A more or less related question if I may. Would I be correct in thinking that for footage that is solely intended for DVD (PAL) that a 25p would be an appropriate setting whilst footage intended only for YT a 30p setting would be better?

Anything intended purely for computer playback can be any danged frame rate you want. Make it 22.487fps if you like. It doesn't matter.

The only reason to shoot for 25fps for PAL or 29.97fps for NTSC is that you may encounter legacy playback hardware such as DVD players and TV sets that only operate at a fixed frame rate.

Hello Eugenia,

Thanks for your answer. The part about "disable resample" and ghosting is invaluable.

Let's go back to the original question, which I didn't state very well. Sorry about that.

If I shoot at 60p, slow down to 24p using your example, and insert into a 24p timeline, will the look of the two be similar? Or do I need to do something else to fit the slowed segment in and have it look similar?

Thanks,

BT

It will look slow-motion. But other than that, it would look fine with 24p footage.
