Matching project properties

I have some HD video on the timeline that is 1440x1080 I added some jpg photos to the timeline and am trying to match the project properties of the video to the photos.

My understanding is that if this is correct the photos will match the height and width of the video. I plan on panning and zooming into the photos. I have tried to click on the project properties in the video preview window and then click on the video to match and also I have also tried clicking the project propertiesin the upper toolbar.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have

If you're going to be rendering HD 1080 then set the properties to 1920x1080 with a PAR of 1.0 and be done with it. 1440x1080 is an old obsolete holdover from tape days which will be converted to 1920x1080 when played on any HD monitor anyway, and any output format except printing back to tape will also be 1920x1080. 1920x1080 will also work better for the photos.

The ONLY thing you gain by matching project properties to the media is possibly faster & smoother preview while editing. It doesn't gain any advantage with the actual editing or rendered output. I advocate for matching the properties to the desired output thereby letting you see what the finished product will be while editing.

In addition to HDV tape, early AVCHD cameras recorded in 1440x1080 as well.

The short version - if you are zooming in or panning across the photo, make sure that the overall aspect ratio of the photo is 16:9 (1920x1080) = 1.778. You can keep larger resolution pictures in the timeline. This is especially useful if you are zooming. If you find your version of Vegas not keeping up with the large resolution pictures (older versions had issues handling larger resolution pictures), then use 1920x1080.

1920x1080 is what you should use; that is the DISPLAY aspect, and with the other parameters correctly set, should cause relatively little degradation of preview fps. OTOH, putting stills in an anamorphic project is just asking for frustration.

Musicvid,

Absolutely right on the money. I wrestled with that issue a few years back.
