Maximizing content in music compilation

I would like to shovel as many low-bitrate MP3 files as possible into a menu-based DVD. When I add a 6.5MB (30-minute) audio to a music compilation, it consumes 52.2MB using AC-3 encoding. Is it possible obtain a greater degree of compression? I wish I could approach the amount of content that would be possible if I were creating a data DVD of MP3 files. Audio fidelity in this case is not much of an issue.

Have you changed the bitrate of the AC-3 encoding? Just like MP3 files, AC-3 can be encoded at different bitrates in order to get different compression. Go to the Optimize dialog and you can change compression there.

That's what I had expected, but I cannot find anything that allows audio bitrate to be set. Under audio I see only:
Estimated size (MB)
Duration
Compliant
Recompress
Recompress Settings
Type [choose between "from project", PCM, AC-3, AC-3 surround]
There are opportunities to set video bitrate, but not audio. Help states that AC-3 bitrate can be set from 64-448kbps, but where?

Well, I think I was wrong, and you can't do it in DVDA. See this thread:

Audio and Video bitrate and other compression settings

You definitely can do it in Vegas.

Yes. In Rendering section of Vegas. I never noticed it either, until I learned about tweaking ac3 files, here. It's at top of list.
