Because I'm going to get a newer videocamera that has a SDHC card I am sure the file will have to be Transcoded to AVI to use on the time line. I 'm currently using the platinam vers of 6. Will the newest version allowt me to just drop the video files on the time line or will I in fact have to trascode them first. Thanks

Any sugestions on a camera thats works well with this software?

If your camera is going to do any HD, you will definately need to upgrade IMHO. As for type of camera, it's more of which format does the camera use, VMS handles most of them very well. Cin
PS. If you are using ver 6, a newer more powerful computer may also be in your future. :)

Standard def or Hi-def?

My camcorder also records onto SDHC in .mod format (standard def)which the camera's software converts to .mpg for me, even though Vegas Movie Studio CAN read either format. I am using 9, though, so I am not sure if your version 6 will be able to without upgrading.

If you aren't going Hi-def, then try version 6 before upgrading and see. If you are going Hi-def, you will need to upgrade the software and probably computer, too, as OMG suggested.

Sort of related: the problem I have using my SDHC camera is that since everything is brought into Vegas as MPEG-2, I insist the quality stinks and is much more difficult to work with than with my old MiniDV camcorder, but I couldn't find another MiniDV these days and I couldn't find any other camcorder for around $300 that recorded into anything other than MPEG-2 or h.264.

The other caveat is that if you are recording in standard def, but widescreen, you will have to tell Vegas that your files are widescreen once you put them on your timeline...

Good luck and I am curious what you think of working with such a camera (if it's going to be standard definition).

My current camera is a Panny GS320. It takes pic in both standard 4:3 and wide but not HD. Its a minidv so I use tapes. Wanting to get into HD is the problem in choosing a camera thats still produces a uncompressed avi file. I'm not sure there is one.

My computer has plenty of power for now as I 'm always buiding new ones. I can render a 1hr 15min move in just 20 mins. I'm sure there are others much faster but this is find for now. I just got a new computer case and will be building a new one by spring.

Looks like I should also upgrade my movie studio. My luck is if I upgrade to 9 then vers 10 would most likely come out. Which by the way has anyone heard of a new release? Thanks for the help.

I have not heard of any news about a new release of Vegas. However, that topic has been discussed it this thread:
