I find that I get work done at a considerably quick pace compared to other folks on other editors. Some work I do is hourly.... Maybe I should switch to a differen't slower editor to make more money?

Any Suggestions?

Dave

(this is only a joke - i have no desire to actually switch, but I did think that it's not always so great to be getting everything done fast :) ).

That is called "knowing your product". That also ensures that your customers will remain your customers as they can come to and get things done cheaper and better and in the end, you make more b/c you retain and attract customers by doing what you do well, faster, and cheaper. It may not look like it pays off now, but overall, it pays off big.

Also, if you are concerned about "making more money", why not just increase your hourly rates by x? Or add a two hour minimum charge.

I think though that you already know that and that you were just trying to show that Vegas is superior to other editors in that its setup allows for a quicker workflow.

Have you given anymore thought to that documentary that you were considering several months ago?

Haven't really had a lot of time to do it too much going on right now - and it's something that would consume LARGE amounts of time to do. It may sit for a good while before it actually gets done.

Perhaps you could specify a minimum bill. This is the way most freelance production people work. For instance, as a grip or electrician I always billed for a 10 hour day with OT extra. The way I stated it on the bill was:

$45.00/hour, ten hours minimum billing
1.5 x after 10 hours
2.0x after 12 hours

In your case you might specify a minumum daily billing, on the assumption that there are only so many sessions you can schedule for a day, or only so many sessions you can book for a month.

Of course you need to stay competitive but I think you might find that others in your area are happy to follow a practice that benefits them.
