Media bins and subclips

vicmilt wrote on 4/22/2004, 12:04 PM
Huzzah on the implementation of media bins and sub-clips... but...
is there any way to copy the media bins from one project to another?

We like to pre-edit and pre-organize various elements in a show before we combine ALL into one final show. So we might have a VEG file of just the interviews with Joe, broken down into his various discussion elements, ie, the office, his home, his hobbies, etc. We'll prelog and then pre-cut his stuff for inclusion into the final show. Using labeled bins REALLY helps.
SO -
Is there any way to carry over the extensive pre-organization that is now available in Vegas, by copying and pasting these presorted bins?

(Up until now we've been doing this pre-organization at the finder level, but that is unweildy at best - this is definitely better).

yes, check the manual for this.

Sorry to be dense, but I don't (and didn't) see the answer of copying or moving named media bins from one project to another, in either the white paper or the manual or the help file.
If you know how, would you let me know?
Thanks...

Open 2 copies of Vegas
Drag the bin you want to transfer to the second vegas media pool.

You can also do this with any open video capture window. :)

Hmmm... but bins still don't seem to import from the vidcap window eh? Wish I could grab my folders of pre-organized captured media and drop them into the media pool. :-/

Exac -i-tic-ally !

Media management is one of the most important points of editing software and implementation. Many of you have never had the opportunity of movable, renamable, copy and pastable "sub-clip" organization.

You don't know what you've been missing. Those of us raised in the early days of AVID MC miss and need this important bit of pre-edit categorization.

Now don't get me wrong - I LOVE Vegas - and I've been patientely waiting for what's almost here - sub-clips in nameable, movable, copiable and pasteable folders - almost, but still not quite there (as far as I can see).

Note to Sony rep: please bring a working editor into your next design conference - we need less "bells and whistles" like the addressable transition timers (how often will even the "cheesiest editor" use that stuff?) and just a little more organizational conceptualization, something you will use every day.

Overall, I am Extremely Happy with v5 - it just gets better and better.
Sub-clips, 3D, bezier masking, network rendering - wow!
Keep up the good work - my old AVID MC 9000 contnues to gather dust.
Thanks.

Hmm you can actually copy bins from the vidcap window to vegas...
Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 10:04 AM
How'd you do it Nat? I've tried everything!!! @#!$!
Nat wrote on 4/23/2004, 10:31 AM
Right click on the bin in the vidcap utility.

Click Add to media pool.

By the way, given the conspicuous silence of those in know, does anyone else think that this is already in the works and probably close to completion?

I do.

I tried that. It extracted the clips from the bin and dumped them in the media pool with everything else. Bye bye organization.

Here, it transfers the bin. works well for me, I usually start organizing my bins in the vidcap...

In that case I'll have to figger it out eventually... I hate having to create the folder structure twice... once when capturing and once when starting the project. This is something that came up with V4... glad to hear it has been addressed in V5. Now if I could only get it to work! @#$%! ;)
Nat wrote on 4/23/2004, 11:24 AM
Well, the way I work I only need to create it once in the vidcap util...
vicmilt wrote on 4/24/2004, 9:28 AM
Hey Nat -
Would you detail your process for us, please?
Nat wrote on 4/24/2004, 9:41 AM
Well, let's say I have a one hour tape to capture, Let's say this tape contains scenes in 3 categories, Exterior shots, Interior shots and night shots.
I will usually begin by logging all the clips I want in Vidcap under the advanced tab. I first create 3 folders, Interior, Exterior and night. And the logged clips will go in their respective folders. Once the logging is done, I hit batch capture and go take a coffee. When the clips are captured, If all went well the media bin structure I created in vidcap is already in Vegas, so I have my 3 folders there. If I need to use the structure for a new project, I right click the bin structure in vidcap and select add to media pool, the whole structure will be added. If I only need the exterior folder, I will right click this folder only.
Once I am in Vegas the file structure is done and I can add other folders if I need to (Images, sound etc).

Does this make sense to you ?

Edit : these things aren't new to Vegas 5, the vidcap bin structure was there in V3 and the structured media pool in V4.

vicmilt, if you get it working can you let us know? I'm wondering if there is an option I have to set somewhere...

btw - very clear descripiton thanks Nat
Nat wrote on 4/24/2004, 10:01 AM
cheesehole, what exactely are you trying to do ?
Cheesehole wrote on 4/24/2004, 10:46 AM
Precisely what you described. I can't get the bins from VidCap to Vegas - I get the media files only.

So I guess mine just doesn't work! :D I'll try re-installing...
