Seems to me like you've answered your own question. Most of the software players have issues of some sort or another, just like the STB's do.

MCE has it's set of issues, as does Wmplayer, so might be some effects from that. Otherwise there are specific plug-in packs made for wmplayer to enable DVD playback & installing Power DVD 6 or 7 (maybe v 5?) just provides a mpg2 playback codec -- I would guess one of the plug-ins might offer more DVD funtionality in Wmplayer, but that's only a guess... Since there are several related DS filters/files used, some of which are only accessible to Power DVD, you might start there if determining the cause of the crash is important to you.

Having Power DVD installed along with a couple of other DVD players, like many (most?) others I've never had reason to use wmplayer for DVDs -- even if it works flawlessly, doesn't (probably can't) perform as well as a software DVD player.
