is there anyway to ORGANIZE pictures after you import them from the "import media" tab into the media pool
eg if I am importing pics from 2008 - can I keep all of these together -
the media pool arranges them very randomly and they are hard to find when you create the project - especially if you have lots of pics and video - I have to scroll though them all
I have the older 4.0 version VMS - do any of the later versions have this capability????

I don't find the media pool useful at all. I import to the timeline directly from the Explorer window. So, one easy method there would be to create separate folders on your hard drive for each group of pictures and move the pictures into those folders first.

Also, the explorer window and the media pool window should be sorting sort of alphabetically/numerically. If you want all the 2008 pictures together you could rename them all to start with "2008-" at the beginning of the filenames.

Use the "Media Bins" feature right there in the Project Media tab. (Note: I don't know if VMS 4.0 had this feature.)

Right-click on the Media Bins folder and select "Add New Bin" (or something like that -- I'm not at a computer with Vegas installed). You can name it "2008 Photos" or whatever you wish. You can then drag photos from the media pool and drop them into this bin (looks like a folder).

These bins are not quite the same as folders, though, because the same item can be in multiple bins, and the original item itself is not moved. The bins are just a feature for organizing your content -- they do not affect the actual media location on your hard disk.

For example, you could have a bin called "2008 Photos", and another bin called "Johnnie", and if you have a picture Johnnie's birthday in 2008 you could have that photo in both bins.

If you have navigated into a bin and then add media to your project, I believe those photos or video clips will automatically go into the open bin. So you can create "2009 Photos", navigate into it, then import your photos from 2009 and they'll be right there. Otherwise, just drag and drop media that you already have in your project.

I use bins a great deal on large projects, especially with mixed media (photos and video in the same project). I just wish some of the user interface stuff was improved a bit. It would be nice to have an icon to create a new bin, and being able to drag the bins around to any order would be very helpful as well.
