Media Manager: how do YOU use it?

I've just installed my upgrade to V6, media manager and all. Populated my "default" library via a scan of media on my main "library" directory. I even selected the option that instructs MM to add tags according to the context of the media, whatever that is meant to do.

Now I have a default library of 3000+ media items, all of which have a tag indicating the date of the scan and little else. Some of the clips for the the Sony-provided FX files have appropriate tags, but that's it. In fact, some of my .wma files are tagged as both video and audio.

My question is: how do you guys use the Media Manager? Obviously, it isn't practical for me to go through my defualt library clip by clip and assign anywhere from 1 to 5 (or more) tags appropriate for that clip. That would not be worth the time, I think. Seems to me that with the absence of these tags, the MM library is little more than a Windows Explorer window....without the directory structure.

Do you guys create a new MM library for each project, with only that project's clips? I had hoped to use MM to manage all of my "library of media" on my PC.

Any tips and insights on your use of MM would be helpful!

I use it for what you're saying: bulk media organization. I've gone through most of my media (all?) & added tags to them. You can add tags to more then one file at atime. But now if I need a short music bit, I search for music. If I need a countdown VO, I look in VO's. Very usefull.

I find it most useful for organizing projects that are spread out on several hard drives.
Unlike an explorer window, I can have a comprehensive list of media and veg files (which are now treated like media) regardless of their file paths.

I find it has great potential and addresses many of the problems with the project media (media pool) but still needs the following updates to make it really usable.

1. There is no way to load a selected clip into the trimmer. Without this function I am stuck with using the project media (media pool) which lacks many of the things that I like about the media manager such as no wasted space, variable icon size, note & tags etc.

2. When you create a long tag list (that scrolls down) and then select multiple tags, the tag list jumps around lot when selecting creating many extra mouse steps. Very annoying.

You can drag and drop it into the trimmer. Grazie pointed this one out to me.

Tried this? Not to your liking?

Locate Media > Drag to Trimmer OR its Tab. Done!

And yes, there is no button or Menu to date that does this . . just Drag 'n Plop . . .

Thanks, that really helps. I was about to stop using the media manager. Still not as ideal though as double clicking to load into trimmer which allows me to be more efficiant. Like many things in Vegas it's very good but not quite completed. I hope for the next update they really concentrate on fine tuning things like the trimmer, media manager and the little quirks that cause annoyances. But the media manager is a great step forward.

Is there a trick to redocking the search and properties to the media manager. It only wants to dock horizontally and will not let me dock vertically.

Thanks,
