Media Manager: How to stop auto-add files?

I just noticed that Media Manager is automatically adding files I use to the Media Manager database.

How do I stop this action?

I do not see a setting for this in the Media manager options.

I do use Media manager, but only on certain directories. I do not want every file I ever come across added; files are often just around on a temporary basis.

I do not remember Media Manager adding files without me scanning the specified directories, but I see now this is happening. If someone knows how to stop this auto-adding of files would be very helpful.

Would this do it Wolfie?:

Options > Prefs > General > "Save Media-usage relationships in active media library"

Could that be it? It's 7th UP from bottom of the list.

Anyways, why DON'T you want this to happen? Seems illogical to me? Defeats the purpose of having a library? Seriously please tell me - I may be missing something.

It's probably the "temporary basis" part of the original post. This sums up the major reason that Media Manager is of practically no use to me. Aside from my own backgrounds and logo images i've made, absolutely nothing from a project carries over into the next one. All the media is purged when a project is complete. So why bother putting any of it into a library?

Also, why have Media Manager assume that every single media file you touch is something you want in the library? Some folks would probably want to me much more selective and actively choose what is included.

You are 100% correct. Once the temporary asset is deleted, you now have a ton of bad links in Media Manager. It takes a long time to go through and find and delete them all.

Precisely.

I have a LOT of music clips, a few video clips, some still images/logos, etc. I have to, on occasion, go through and clear out the Take # wave files generated, but that is understandable. I only want certain directories scanned and tracked in Media Manager. Media Manager is actually quite helpful to me…but I do not want a free-for-all in tracking each and every file I ever use.

All told I keep about 8500 valid items in the Media Manager. I presently have about 1,000 bad links I now need to find and remove.

I did not try the (Options) steps stated above. Once I get home, I will check it out. I saw that option mentioned, but I didn’t think that this was what I was looking for. I will see.

The easiest way to do this is with a query (that's the power of the Media Manager). On the bottom left of the Media Manager interface is the Advanced query area. Press the green Plus (+) sign and a list of query criteria will be displayed. Double-click on the Offline item and it will be added to the Advanced section. Make sure it is set to True and check the checkbox to make the query active. You will now see only the "broken links" (i.e., off-line media). Select all and press delete and you're done.

Ya' know, it seemed inconceivable to me that this kind of feature was not available.
