Media Manager? "Image Path"? You got one?

Grazie wrote on 11/6/2005, 11:31 PM
WARNING

What is in your Windows Registry?

In my 40 day quest to re-establish my Media Manager - after updating to Vegas6c - a kind soul has pointed me to a correction that he had to make to make Media Manager work for him.

What I'm doing is initially finding out from my good friends here what they have within their own registry. I want you to interrogate and report back, to me, either here or by email, what and IF you have the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR\Image Path

This is very very interesting indeed!

I'm going to inform SONY help-desk about this. Nobody has asked for my registry settings.

I have NOT altered anything yet. I'm going to wait for replies on the matter.

hmmm . .. .

Grazie

Hi Grazie

I don't have MM enabled, but I DO have the Image Path file sitting comfortably at that address in my Registry.

Thanks Peter! This IS starting to look/appear conclusive . . oh yes my friend . .oh yes! Peter, tell me .. do you have anything within it?

Thanks for the rapid response . . .

Any others? I need more evidence of this.

The plot thickens ...

Grazie, the PC I found the file present on was my laptop. It is a REG_EXPAND_SZ type file rather than a folder, so there's nothing "within it".

BUT

I just powered up my main machine which, like my laptop has Vegas 6.0c installed but Media Manager not enabled, and this machine does NOT have the folder called MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR

Grazie wrote on 11/7/2005, 12:08 AM

Hmmm .. my dear Watson . . . Now, have you ever enabled MM on the no-show " MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR" PC?

Interesting that there is NOTHING within that folder. Agaion, have you ever enbvaled MM on that machine? I don't know what the "REG_EXPAND_SZ" means, and eans for me.

So, we now have 3 machines not exhibiting the same Registry entry.

More please!

Grazie

Bearing in mind that I rarely use 6.0c,
MM is enabled and does fire-up 90% of the time,
I have following folders
enum, linkage, performance, security.
I do not have image_path possibly because I have never used it. It just sits there.
PeterWright wrote on 11/7/2005, 12:31 AM
From memory I did the same with both machines - installed the full V6 upgrade then disabled Media Manager straight away. I may have this wrong though - there must be some reason for the difference.

Just to clarify:

On the laptop, ImagePath is a file in the folder named MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR

On the desktop there is no folder called MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR at the same location in the Registry.

Mahesh:
"Bearing in mind that I rarely use 6.0c," Yeah, I think we all know this by now! - LOL! !!

"MM is enabled and does fire-up 90% of the time,I have following folders
enum, linkage, performance, security. I do not have image_path possibly because I have never used it. It just sits there." Sorry Mahesh? The first part you say it fires up 90% of the time - then you say you don't you use it? What is the difference?

Peter, got it! Does MM work on any of your machines now? Thanks

Are we witnessing something inconsistent here?

Grazie

Grazie, too early in the morning to be articulate.
* Fires up 90% of the time:- sometimes I get error saying unable to load MM.
* I do not use it:- I have not used the database facilities to manipulate, name or tag things. I presume that's the reason I do not have image path set.
Then again, I may be completely wrong.
PeterWright wrote on 11/7/2005, 2:05 AM
No Grazie, I don't use MM at all.
Grazie wrote on 11/7/2005, 2:11 AM
Peter, thanks . .

Mahesh thanks for the clarifacation too.

Now, what?

Anybody else wanna interrogate their Registry for me? Maybe those who DO use Media Manager? Successfully?

Grazie

I've got it. I've used MM before in V6c.
It's not a sub-folder, but I can see it on the right side.

Hi Grazie,

I do use Media Manager successfully and I do have the registry entry you asked about and the Image Path value is:

D:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR\Binn\sqlservr.exe -sSONY_MEDIAMGR

Looks like this is the command that fires up the SQL Server and tells it what database handle to attach to.

Grazie,
These registry values are the parameters for the MM "Windows Services".

If you were to go to XP Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Services and Applications, Services, you find the MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service that you can start/stop. The Image Path tells the service controller what to start.

I'm writing a Windows Service right now and those parameters look familiar.

I'm not getting the mystery?

Edited: I don't use MM and I have a value in the Image Path. Are you saying your's is blank?

Thanks Guys!

fldave - unlike all our friends above I DON'T have "Image Path" at the end. I have other "ends", but nothing for "Image Path". So presumably if the "Image Path" is NOT apparent then Windows wouldn't know WHAT to start for MM? Yes? This is exactly the symptoms/condition I'm getting. Vegas falters at loading MM. If this IS the case then I might be onto something.

Grazie

Are you SURE you don't have "ImagePath"? If you open that "branch", I see 4 sub-branches:

Enum
Linkage
Performance
Security

However, if you actually click on "MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR", I see 7 entries:

{Default}
DisplayName
ErrorControl
ImagePath
ObjectName
Start
Type
fldave wrote on 11/7/2005, 11:34 AM
Yes, Image Path is only in the top/main branch.

Grazie, you might try to stop/restart the service in the Services manager path, then go to the Event Viewer (further up in Computer Management window above services) to see what error messages may occur. Messages should appear for all services start/stop.

An uninstall/reinstall of Vegas "should" have cleared the registry entries and recreate them correctly.

Edward, I have the same as you. I was quoting back the "Image (space) Path" that was offered earlier today. I see that in the Registry it is in the "BRANCH" and is closed up together, as in:- ImagePath

"Eric" has suggested that I use "PC Stress" to correct any Windows issues? Says it worked for him, when HIS MM was misbehaving. Anybody know this "little devil" http://www.pcstress.net/en/ ?

"Yes, Image Path is only in the top/main branch." - uhuh!

"Grazie, you might try to stop/restart the service in the Services manager path, then go to the Event Viewer (further up in Computer Management window above services) to see what error messages may occur. Messages should appear for all services start/stop." At the moment the Services says "manual" - huh?

"An uninstall/reinstall of Vegas "should" have cleared the registry entries and recreate them correctly. " Well maybe it did!

Anyways, in Services against - MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR - I 've got "Manual".

This is real sad . ..

Grazie

Manual as opposed to Automatic. Not sure, but I would think that starting Vegas should start MM.

Start Vegas (having the option to use MM set in preferences), then go to the Event Viewer part of Computer Management, the System tab. Look at the recent entries, and you should see where the MM/SQL Service is Starting. If there are errors somewhere, they should appear in individual event items.

I just tested this, turned on MM, restarted Vegas, and got about 4 messages about the Service(s) starting. Look for any errors.

Grazie, still having problems? are you seeing any errors in your computer management event logs?

"Grazie, still having problems?" - Yes, with MM, yes. And MM still works in ACID Pro5. The only grief I'm having is when I attempt to "VIEW" MM in Vegas. I can have MM selected within Prefs, but as soo as I elect to VIEW, then stalls on loading MM and I have to close Vegas down. If I do a CTRL+SHIFT - factory default Vegas Boot up - and then JUST set MM on closing and then on reopening Vegas stalls and freezes at the MM loading. Media Manager still works in ACID Pro5.

" are you seeing any errors in your computer management event logs?" Yes, and over the time since I updated to Vegas 6c. Under request from SONY I have sent SONY support copies of these too. SONY are working on this - though, I'm guessing, it will take time. I'm sure they are looking at this as an opportunity to improve matters for me. Who knows, it may even assist them when they need to solve this for others too? I do hope so.

However, I really do miss Media Manager . . . . such a breath of fresh air from using Vegas Explorer. If one does straightforward shoot and assemble work, I can see that MM would be kinda over the top - but for me, who rummages around for stuff - vizzies/loops etc - it is/was great!

I haven't and will not mess with my Registry - oh no! I was hoping I was going to get something that I could at least report to SONY. As it appears that I have the same as others I don't see the need to do anything now.

I will need to wait on SONY.

Thank you friends - thank you SONY,

Grazie
