Media Manager: Who's having problems??

StormMarc wrote on 8/8/2005, 10:51 AM
I'm trying to figure out why I am having so many problems with a project that was working flawlesslessy for 3 weeks now I am lucky if I can get Vegas started. It is a big project with about 1900 clips tagged in media manager but whenever I have to exit Vegas I spend a long time time trying to get Vegas to not to freeze during startup and opening of the library. I end task, and restart over and over until finally it starts up and let me work again. Other times it starts up with no problems

What use is a program if it only work parts of the time and stops/starts working for no reason whatsover. This is driving me nuts!

The Media Manager is a "bolt-on" elephant that is total overkill. I understand the idea of not wanting to create brand new code for what is simply a database function -- that's not the area of expertise that Sony wants to invest in. On the other hand, there must be a far smaller, lighter database that could have been chosen. Virtually everyone complains about startup times when Media Manager is enabled.

Sony: Slow startup times is not normal behavior for an application. This must be fixed.

Database and search programs can, and should, be quick and efficient.

StormMarc wrote on 8/8/2005, 12:32 PM
Heck, I'd just like to get the darn thing to start. Once MM is enabled and you start having problems you can not even start up a new project in Vegas because it always trys to open the last database which in turn freezes the program... uuuggh!!

My solution: Disable Media Manager.

I have MM Disabled on all my systems.... as I have had far too many problems with it while working on projects with a tight deadline. Shame really... as I could definitely make use of the tagging/searching features.

I went threw quite the concerted effort to get it working again when it was crashing on me only because, at least in previous releases, Vegas had an issue with crashing while capturing if it wasn't enabled. I haven't had to capture anything from tape in awhile so this hasn't been an issue ( don't know if its fixed or not ), but when I started getting the error message again last week when starting Vegas I just disabled it.

I personally have no use for it and ONLY had it enabled because it seemed I had to. The difference between opening Vegas with and without it is night and day and even if it did offer something for me, would still probably opt for the much faster startup.

Just my opinion of course, I'm sure someone has a use for it ... I just haven't met them yet. Seems to me a little more time and money into R&D would have saved Sony the trouble of developing a feature that no one wanted in the first place and given us instead something more of us would have actually appreciated. Don't get me wrong, I still love the program but this just seems to me like time and resources poorly spent.

I too have never used or needed the MM, but I can appreciate that for anyone who builds up a library of footage/sound effects/music loops that they constantly use, it must be great to access something quickly. Being able to add many different tags for cross reference purposes would also be handy.

I shoot new footage for each project and compose new music, so Explorer does it for me. I have wondered about learning how Media Manager works for indexing sound effects and maybe Acid loops, but to be honest I hardly use them, and reports about how Media Manager can slow things down have deterred me from dabbling.
StormMarc wrote on 8/8/2005, 11:18 PM
I find it very useful for certain types of projects. For example I am working on a promotional video for a certain Catholic Church & School. I filmed about 37 hours of footage and much of it was of the Mass. I had over 1900 clips to choos from and doing this with bins would have been very tedious especially with how limited the bins are in Vegas.

Instead I made custom tags having to do with my project and tagged every clip. Editing was a breeze. Need a shot from the balcony with a low zoom on a crane of the priest incensing the altar? No problem... just check mark the tags that relate to what I want a walla. There they are in the media manager. Drop them in the trimmer and edit. So it is a really an big help on large projects.

Just wish the Media Manager was more stable and it also needs a few enhancements.

Only 6.0 crashes I've had have been MM related. Turning it off, things are back to normal, fast & stable Vegas.

It's a shame because media management is something I'd been shouting about since 4, and with the way it is now, I'd sooner not have it and use some sort of external filing system.

Speaking of which, Copernic Desktop Search (free) is lightning fast and can in many ways function as a good partner to Vegas (or any app, for that matter). Seems so far very stable, though its "instant update" index function doesn't seem to actually work -- so you've got to schedule for regular index updates.

We have not been able to reproduce Vegas freezing on start with the media manager enabled and would love to figure out the root cause of your issue.

Can you try a few things for us:

(a) Make sure you are using Vegas 6.0b, not 6.0a or 6.0

(b) Enable the Media Manager, but disable "Save media-usage relationships in active media library" in the Options > Preferences > General page near the bottom.

(c) When Vegas freezes on launch, is it using any CPU time (use task manager to check)? Is your hard disk busy seeking away?

Can you also look for a log file named c:\program files\sony\vegas 6.0\vegas60.log and post the contents of that - it is an ascii text file.

Yeah, mine freezes with MM sometimes. I tried to need it (as it's there). I tried to find a use for it. But couldn't so diabled it. Doesn't freeze now.

PTT still doesn't work though.
No answer on lost DVD recorders with NVidea chipsets either.

I'm only using V6 as I like to preview on 2nd screen. If it wasn't for that, I'd be back to my beloved 5d where everything I needed seemed to work so well (small tear in my eye).

There is a chance that this thread may be helpful.

Sony actually responded to my crashing issues and actually provided a workaround that did helpo my crashing issues. It's worth a try.

***6.0b

(b) Enable the Media Manager, but disable "Save media-usage relationships in active media library" in the Options > Preferences > General page near the bottom.

***Disabled that a while ago per your suggestion

(c) When Vegas freezes on launch, is it using any CPU time (use task manager to check)? Is your hard disk busy seeking away?

***No CPU is at 4%

Can you also look for a log file named c:\program files\sony\vegas 6.0\vegas60.log and post the contents of that - it is an ascii text file.
