Media Mangler

I had about 800 DV proxy clips in Media Manager. Each clip had 2 tags. I am importing via XDCAM explorer because these are MXF DV files recorded on XDCAM discs. Everything was going along swimmingly until I noticed that my computer was becoming sluggish. I shut down Vegas normally without any errors and closed all applications and rebooted. Upon rebooting and re-entering Vegas I quickly see that bout 200 clips in Media Managare are now showing up offline. What the ?????#$#$

After some investigating, I realized that approximately 200 of the proxy files have dissappeared on the file storage level!! I mean if you go to windows explorer and navigate to the missing file you will just find an empty folder!! They have completely dissappeared! There was no deleting of any kind nor is there anything in the recycle bin.

This is the second time this has happened where clips have just dissappeared. One time was not using media manager but merely creating a similar structure in Project Media using bins. Suddenly, a huge of number of clips that had been properly imported using XDCAM simply disappeared. Poof!!!! I have never seen anything like this and am fast losing confidence in the Vegas file structure and media manager workflow. How do I know that more data won't simply disappear?

No idea what the problem is here.

That is not a good thing to be happening. I've never used Media Manager, but if this is happening at the file level with or without MM due to setting your own bin structure - this doesn't bode well for Vegas.

Indeed Blu, this is very scary. Here is one error/bug that I can duplicate each time. When you do a search within Media Manager it automatically creates a scan tag. This is supposed to help you return to previous searches. But if I delete any of those scans to free up some desktop space I get the following error every time. The first line seems to be the important part. Apparently I did some kind of a no/no but what I'm not exactly sure. The manual on Media Manager is about 2 paragraphs so I guess this software wasn't fully cooked when served.

I get a crash about 50% of the time when I create a new library and delete all the tags so I can start from scratch.

Kairo, didn't quite get what you said. Could you explain that again please.
kairosmatt wrote on 8/19/2008, 11:27 AM
When you create a new library, it already has some generic video and audio tags in it. Lately I've been bringing Media in that already has tags saved in the file. To make sure things on the tag frame don't end up cluttered, I started deleting the tags before I imported, and then sometimes it just crashed!

I can't remember if it gave me any message, but I will try again and see if its the same as above.

Kairo,

Ouch, that is a bad sign. An error so simply reproducible shows that this thang is gonna be way twitchy. I have to admit that I chose to go with Vegas a few months ago because of what it promised with the XDCAM workflow and the Media Manager. Is anyone but me using Vegas for hundreds, if not ultimately thousands of XDCAM proxies for longform doc style TV? I was warned not to go with Premiere because it couldn't handle long form but what NLE really does? My Discreet Edit did, may it rest in peace. Is it Avid only?

erikd - it may very well be that Avid MC is the way to go for you. I'm still sitting on the fence right now about Vegas - I love how quickly I can bring files onto the timeline and edit video and audio as the timeline plays - but if it's at the expense of lost work due to immature features being thrown in as an after thought - I'll have to relegate Vegas to simple web video's lasting only a few minutes and let another NLE do the heavy lifting so to speak.

Right now - my leaning is towards Avid Media Composer - but I'm fighting tooth and nail on that issue.

Blue,

I feeling a little blue right now because I think I have found...... operator error. I thought XDCAM explorer was merely a tool for importing proxies and full ress files to my computer hard drive, a ripper if you will. I thought once "the ripper" had finished doing its job that I could delete the entries inside the XDCAM window itself. I know, I know, seems really stupid now but at the time I thought it made a lot of sense.

Of course, since I now know that you can never? delete these files from the XDCAM explorer window, it looks like that window is going to get very messy and cluttered very soon.

Neeeveerrrrrr mind!

Losing the links to my clips is a consistent problem I'm having in my Vegas 8.1. And it has nothing to do with Media Manager, as far as I can see, since I don't use the Media Manager. When I shut down Vegas and later start up again, I often get a pop-up saying Vegas can't locate my clips, with options to designate where the clips are located, or to leave them off-line. I've moved all my clips into the same file as the project file and re-linked all the clips, but losing the clips on shut-down is still a problem. I'm posting this error elsewhere for assistance, too.
