MEDIA PLACE HOLDERS - RED and other issues

I'm running Vegas 9.0c on an XP 32bit system, HP XW9300 Workstation, maxed out RAM (as much as a 32 system will allow) and great LaCie hard drives. Nonetheless, since upgrading to 9.0c from v.8, I'm having an abnormal number of issues that appear to be memory related but I don't know for sure. Can someone please help me?

1) I'll be editing the time line, importing jpgs, pngs, audio wav files and DV through the Media Manager.

2) Whenever I import stuff to use on the timeline, regularly my system freezes. Don't know why! I always have to exit out of Vegas and then re-launch it and find the place where I left off and go back to work until the next time it all happens.

3) Regularly, while editing, my video footage on the timeline goes away and the video placeholder turns bright red and the playback head seeing nothing there! Gone! ONLY when exit out of Vegas and re-launch, THEN it comes back normal until the next time that the software gives me those symptoms again.

4) While editing, the playback head will be traveling down the timeline and at what I might call unpredictable moments, the video preview will be giving me flash frames of noise, kind of like when you might get a microscopic piece of dust on the drum of your video camera when running tape across it. I don't know how else to explain it; just little flash frames of colorful "noise." At first, I thought this stuff was actually recorded on my footage. But when I exit out of Vegas and re-launch, everything is back to normal until the next time it happens; then, I go through the same procedure again and again and again. Very frustrating. ALSO, I notice that IF I DON'T Exit when I see this stuff, at some point thereafter, the timeline media placeholders will turn bright red and again, nothing; that is until I relaunch. In some cases, I actually have to REBOOT my entire system to clear out the ram memory.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before or is this just my system?! Would appreciate some help, please.

Again, I am running a system that is well equipped to handle video and it's all being run on a dedicated machine that essentially runs only stuff that is audio and video related.

Please HELP.

Thanks.

Yep, I was having those issues as well on my XP 32 bit system - old machine running a AMD x2 processor. Mixing jpgs and other media seem to cause these problems for some people. Using only png files seems to help, the best advice seems to be limit the number of "species" of files in your project.

Right now I'm putting a new i7 Windows 7 system through it's paces and things are looking a lot better.

I am still getting the occasional timeline media turning red/black but I just close and re-open the project and everything seems to sort itself out. The nice thing is with the new machine the close/re-open process only takes a few seconds.

Hope this helps, also do a search on the red/black timeline media thing - this has been discussed a ton. From what I understand it is a known bug and everyone is hoping it gets sorted out with the next update to Vegas. Rumor has that update coming out around NAB, mid April-ish.

My best guess is that the drive with the media has issues.

The "freeze" is probably from slow access to the media, not a crash. I get temporary freezes too because I use a NAS. I just wait for Vegas to finish whatever it's doing.

Great thanks. I didn't realize that it was an issue with others also. I'm assuming the techies at Sony in Madison know what's going on? Maybe not, hummm. Well, perhaps some others will post some thoughts about all of my "issues" with v.9c; in fact, all of the 9 series releases. I can't recall v. 8 having these problems. I'll hope that some others have some workaround solutions besides always having to exit and relaunch. It gets old. Thanks again.
