media wont load

When i open up VMS and drop an avi file in the video track it loads audio but the video is blacked out. I then close out VMS, try it again and it then loads ok. Any suggestions ?

I've no idea what the problem is, but what sort of AVI file is it?

It is downloaded to my PC from a dv camera via firewire. I capture with Adobe elements. It used to work up untill a couple of weeks ago.
