MediaPlayer Crash on MPEG2

garo wrote on 9/13/2004, 1:12 AM
Suddenly the WINDOWSMediaPlayer ver9 crashes upon opening newly rendered mpeg-2 files - nothing else crashes and only the mpeg-2 rendered since yesterday.

Anyone recocgnize the problem? (The only thing I can think of that I did that was "new" was to un-install Vegas4 since V5 seems to be all I need now)
BTW - I am using WXP

Have you been able to play mpeg2 files in the WMP9 before or is this the first time you try that specific format? In my experience the WMP9 have some issues. I still use it for testing purposes but my main player is Media Player Classic. It's free, takes up only little space on your drive, does not clutter your registry and it plays everything without complaints (if you have the appropriate decoders installed).
Try it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/

One thing is important though. Keep WMP9 since it's what most people use. If you are going to distribute files it's always a good thing to test them in different media players before you send them out. The problem you describe might be on your system only but if it's not we need to dig deeper into this.

BTW - WMP9 and MPC can co-exist on the same system with no problems.

I was wondering if there is something I could have changed in the Render Settings that would be causing a "unreadable" file. "Default" seems to keep a few preferences from previous renderings. I think I fiddle too much sometimes

:) Yes, it could be that. Try a "normal" setting and render out a small piece to try in WMP9.

Now I've tried the safest Default render in mpeg-2 and it's still crashing the player!
All other files play without exception!
Only the files I render now crash.

Help?!?

It sounds like something to do with MPEG may have gotten lost or corrupted. Try doing the following:

1. Delete the folder that contains the MPEG plug-in and its contents. In a typical Vegas 5 installation, this is "C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG".

2. Uninstall and reinstall Vegas 5.0 b. If you have Vegas 5+DVDA, uninstall and reinstall DVDA 2.0b (which shipped with a more recent MPEG build than Vegas 5.0b).

I actually have the same problem, but only if I try to play back elementary video streams with WMP9. If I play abck multiplexed audio+video mpeg2 files, it plays back just fine. But if I render out using the DVD Author NTSC Widescreen preset from Vegas, WMP crashes when I try to open it. If I render out normal mpeg2 using the MainConcept mpeg2 preset the file plays just fine.

Since I only render elementary streams when I am ready to author it to DVD I don't care too much that it doesn't play bck in WMP9 as the mpeg2 files with sound play back just fine.
