Memory issues ??

Ok, so I am working on a new project utilizing HDV (Canon HV20) and various JPEGS. 10 tracks of stuff and about 6 minutes of content

I really would like somebody explain why this is going on:

I am editing away and decide to render this out to Blu ray template 1440 x 1080i. It starts to churn away and at some point approx. 3 min in it stops ansd errors out when the dialog box comes up telling me that the render has stopped due to some unknown reason?

I noticed that the RAM usage was at approx. 68%

So I said crap... and just started it again....... same thing at almost the same point on the timeline, it stopped and gave me the same error. Then I exited the program, reloaded, and loaded the project.
One thing I noticed immediately that the RAM usage was down to 'only' 50%.
Started the same render, and son of a gun, it completed the render this time with NO changes made.

Running Q6600 quad core on Vista Ultimate Vegas 8.0c

Does this really tell me there is some sort of memory management problem within Vegas?????

**...and various JPEGS**

This is a known problem, and thanks for all of the other information you were able to provide.

Large numbers of jpegs, esp. it they are higher resolution, will choke the memory in Vegas. PNG is a much more Vegas-friendly format, which will become evident if you would do a search on this subject.

**One thing I noticed immediately that the RAM usage was down to 'only' 50%.

Any long editing session in Vegas loads the memory, mostly due to the "Undo" cache and accumulated assaults on memory through relentless changes by the nominal user. Standard operating procedure before rendering for me is to Save the Project, reboot if RAM is still higher than normal (infrequently), and re-open the Project. This behavior is also abundantly documented in these forums. See posts by johnmeyer et al for more details.

Well, if you are referring to large numbers of JPEG files on the Vegas timeline, the answer is yes.

So my question to you is, did you experience an error message, crash, or shutdown of Vegas after closing and re-opening the program, or are you just reporting higher than "normal" RAM usage? Hardly a cause for concern if it is the latter, and an easy thing to try to fix if it is one of the former.

To Summarize:
1) Place PNG rather than JPEG on the timeline, and
2) Save the Project, Close and Open Vegas between editing and render.
3) Reboot if the memory usage does not normalize after Step 2).

Hope this helps.

Thanks MusicVid for the detailed response.
To answer your question the crash/stop of the program occured before closing/ restarting of the program.

To me this is obviously a flaw in the program with regards to handling RAM.
I somewhat agree that the fix is relatively easy, by restarting or re-booting, but sure would be nice if this could be fixed in an upcoming release.
