memory usage

I am running a P4 3.0Ghz hyperthreaded box with 512 MB ram... I am in the process of producing a short photo montage, with about 6 video tracks, 1 audio track and not many effects... but when i just play the piece on the timeline the memory usage keeps rising with every frame... It has gone up to 300 MB and that's without playing the whole clip. Is this normal? or am I doing something wrong.

thanks in advance for your replies
Richard

Actually, Vegas seems relatively good about memory consumption, but with 6 video tracks you're definitely putting a load on your ram, 300 mb.'s is nothing. By way of comparision, I can open a single, short, clip in Aftereffects, put a single ram hungry effect on it, and see my ram usage go to 750-850 mb when it plays. I would imagine that people who edit for a living must have to use at least, if not more,1.5-2.0 gb of ram to keep their machines from freezing up..

Looks like I will have to make the move up to at least a gig in the immediate future.. then eventually bump it up to 2
Thanks for the feedback
