Mercalli V4 plugin panning problem -lose frames

Tonzarell wrote on 9/4/2017, 2:10 PM

I'm shooting car racing and when I add mercalli plugin effect to stabilize video it kinda loses frames and gets jerky. It happens when car is passing me and I follow the target by panning camera. Happens almost in every shot.

Maybe plugin gets too little information and can't handle it?

I've been trying different settings without any good result. Any ideas how to fix it?

Can you upload a sample of the file for experimentation? Beyond the basics, like making sure your project frame rate matches your media frame rate, there are quite a lot of possible permutations of settings that can help. In my experience, most, but not all, shots can be made to look good.

If I pull Pan Shot Smoothing slider all the way down it helps but don't stabilize like I want to.

Chart:Pan shows green spikes where the jumps are.

Here is alternative download links to 3 "raw" videos and one rough sample where you can see the problem.

Hope these links works.(never done this before)

Not sure what I am looking at here. The dropbox sample.mp4 looks to be the same as what Cornico is working with. Is that AFTER you processed with mercalli v4? Where is the SAME footage before you processed with mercalli v4?

Thanks. I didn't get far enough through the clip - thought the cars were the wrong color. oops :) Will take a look.

OK. Just to confirm. We are looking at the HUGE hiccup that the white car makes as it passes the camera - makes it look like the car is jumping backwards. I don't think changing the settings will help but there may be another workaround. Seems like MAYBE a bug. Report to ProDAD? What camera is this?

Yes. Sample.mp4 is after Mercalli and others are straight from memory card. I'm doing tests now with Stabilize. Last time I used it in VPro13 it didn't work at all. Looks like they fixed it in VPro 14. I upgraded Pro in June to get Mercalli V4. Thats why I'm frustrated. It is a 149€ plugin after all.

I would agree - for this kind of footage using Vegas' build in seems to work best. Lots of other kinds of footage it is the opposite, however, so no need for Tonzarell to give up totally on mercalli v4 - just use as appropriate.

Stabilizer crashes every time(4k). Don't know why when it works with you guys. My PC is antique tho.

1080 seems to do good. Back to square one.

Camera is Sony FDR-AX100. I can live without stabilize in post for now. It is better to shoot this kind of stuff 1080p50 in the future anyway.

Of course you are always dealing with some amount of camera judder - that's not removeable by the software stabilizer. The 50p will presumably be smoother and you can get set a 1/100 shutter and avoid the staccato look.

Just out of curiosity. How does the ax100 record progressive? Older sony cameras had a "trick" where they used an interlaced file type to store progressive footage (PsF). That might foul up mercalli v4.

You're right. I need to buy rock solid tripod. Damn...I would have some money now if I did not spend 200€ Vegas upgrade for NO REASON as it looks now. First I bought plugin 150€,got upgrade sale 200€ so I canceled plugin purchase and got refund. Yes. This is a 200€ mistake. VPro 13 is good enough for me.

I have no idea.

Don't know because I see it also.
Maybe use the Vegas Stabilizer where I don't see it.

Look

Mercalli

Vegas own

I'm getting pretty good results using Vegas Stabilizer. Looks like I have to downscale 4k to 1080 if stabilization is needed.
