Methods for Previewing on an External Monitor

I figured I would tap the community's knowledge on how they preview video on an external monitor... mainly a television screen.

For the last several years, I have used Data Video's DAC 200 to output to a 32 inch flat screen. The connection has been very simple... a firewire cable to the box and an S video cable to the television. Well my DAC 200 box has taken a crap and it looks like the manufacturer has discontinued it. So I need a new solution.

What is the best way to preview video from my computer to a 32 inch Flatscreen TV? I know there is an add-on card made by black magic design that everyone seems to hate and there are no drivers for 9.0. Wanted to see what other solutions are out there. BTW, my flat screen does HDMI inputs...

Thanks in advance!

At the minimum, you can just replace your crapped-out converter box with a Grass Valley/Canopus ADVC-110 or ADVC-300. Do a search in this forum for many mentions of same.

Are you shooting with a Flip Mino or a full size camera? Which format?

Are you creating videos for your family, or for sale?

A lot of our footage is shot on the Sony F-900 HD Cam and then down-converted. We also occasionally shoot in HDV and mini-dv.

I will research the canopus options...

There's also Black Magic Design's Intensity Pro. I user that for preview monitoring via HDMI.

Why not keep it simple? Most modern video cards have two DVI output ports and Vegas allows you to choose which one that you want to use for full screen preview. If you don't already have one with two DVI ports, buy a nice, inexpensive one, like an nVidia 9800GT (~$100 US). Buy a DVI to HDMI cable and plug it into the TV. If your existing video card already has two DVI output ports, just make sure that you are using the most recent video driver from the manufacturer's website.
